The Church of St. Gervasius and St. Protasius is a Roman Catholic parish church in Perl in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). The church bears the patronage of Saints Gervasius and Protasius and is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland monuments list.

history

The parish of Perl belonged from the 11th century to the French occupation of the area of Kurtrier on the left bank of the Rhine from 1792 as a result of the First Coalition War and the secularization by Napoleon in 1804 to the imperial rule of the cathedral chapter of Trier . A certificate from the year 1200 certificate confirms the leadership of Dompropsts presided over by the cathedral chapter.

From the original church, a Romanesque tower with a late Gothic choir on the south side has been preserved to this day. In 1716 a new nave was built . As part of a renovation, a new clock was installed in the tower in 1750 , which is still in service today.

In 1928 the church underwent a major expansion according to plans by the architect and master builder Julius Wirtz (Trier), during which a new nave was added to the nave from the 18th century to the north. Sarcophagus remains were found during the excavation work for the extension .

A major renovation of the church was carried out in 1979. A new heating system was installed, the organ and the gallery dismantled, a new entrance created and the main altar relocated. After the renovation and conversion work was completed, a cruciform church was built. The last major renovation took place in 2011 and 2012, when the church was given a general overhaul. On June 3, 2012, it was ceremoniously reopened.

Furnishing

The church's furnishings include the baroque high altar , which was created in Lorraine in 1740 . He has figures who preach the Gospel with reference to Christ and Mary and are enthroned by God the Father , lined with the Saints Gervasius and Protasius. The high altar is flanked by two side altars, one of which is dedicated to Our Lady and the other to St. Sebastian .

Further items of equipment are the hexagonal wooden pulpit , which today serves as an ambo and is therefore placed on the same level as the altar pedestal, as well as a figure of St. Quirinius in a small niche next to the high altar.

The altar made of light sandstone in 1999 by sculptor Joan Thimmel ( Borg created) and displays a sacrificial chalice as the main subject. On the front wall of the chalice wall there is a stylized cross as a reference to the host , and on the back wall of the altar there is a large vine leaf as a symbol of both the Eucharist and the Perl wine-growing region.

On the exterior of the church, which is on the Way of St. James , there is a figure of St. James with a pilgrim's staff and calabash in a niche in the west portal .
