St. Quirinus Chapel

St. Quirinus is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Saarland community of Perl . It is a listed monument as a single monument. The little church is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Quirinus von Neuss .

history

A first Quirinus chapel was built in the 17th century on the site of a Celtic well sanctuary, then in 1712 the new chapel was built, which soon became a place of pilgrimage for the entire region. In the course of secularization after the French Revolution, the chapel belonged to the von Nell family from 1803. After 1900, the Quirinus pilgrimages became rare and were almost forgotten due to wars.

In 1936, the von Nell family donated the small church to the Catholic parish of Perl, which, with the help of the civil parish, had it renovated by the architect Mertes from Trier. In 1950 there was another benediction and the church was designated as a war memorial. Refurbishment took place in the same decade. In 1970 the church was renovated again. Since moisture damage threatened the building fabric, drainage was laid and the exterior and interior plaster renewed. The frescoes on the entrance wall and the three sides of the choir were lost. In 1988 the parish transferred the chapel to the civil parish of Perl and received the Michael chapel in Oberperl in exchange. In 2003 the Quirinus Chapel was restored again. The interior was redesigned, the electrical system renewed and the walls inside and outside repainted.

Today the church is only used sacred twice a year: on the Quirinus ride on May 1st and when honoring war victims on Memorial Day .

architecture

The small hall has a choir with a three-sided end. The two sides of the eaves are pierced by two window axes each and are supported by buttresses . A slate roof turret with a high hood sits on the slated gable roof above the choir. The entrance is on the north gable side in a round arched portal with an inscription. Above it is a coat of arms with the year 1712, followed by a niche with a semicircular end with a cast relief. The portal is flanked by two small arched windows. A breakthrough leads from the choir into the oldest part of the chapel from the 17th century, a small rectangular room with cast reliefs.

Furnishing

In a niche above the entrance there is a cast relief depicting St. Showing Quirinus in war armor with a shield and lance on horseback. A carved cross hangs on the right side wall of the choir. In addition, the church has 14 reliefs of the Stations of the Cross that hang on the front wall of the prayer room and a cast plate with a resurrection scene. In a niche in the choir stands a carved Quirin in war armor.
