Johannes Contractus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Contractus ( Johannes Korz ) was a 14th century Franciscan preacher.

A collection of sermons from the second half of the 14th century, initially distributed in handwritten form, which Johann Koelhoff the Elder printed before 1478, is handed down under the author's name Johannes Contractus . Since it contains numerous sermons on Franciscan saints, the collection is probably of Franciscan origin. All other indications of the author's identity, such as the fact that he is Dutch, come from early modern bibliographers and are doubtful. All vernacular name forms are modern back translations. It is unclear whether Contractus is a surname or an adjective to describe the sermons in more detail ( Sermones contracti ). Contrary to what Benjamin de Troeyer suspected, it cannot be inferred from the phrase used in the associated Explicit of the Klosterneuburg, Augustinerchorrenstift , Cod. 251 manuscript , that the author, like Hermann von Reichenau ( Hermannus Contractus ), was crippled.
