Balat is a quarter of the Istanbul district of Fatih .

Surname

The name is derived from the Greek word palation , which means palace when translated into German.

history

For a long time Balat was mainly inhabited by Sephardic Jews . After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, most of them emigrated to their new home. In the last few decades Balat has mainly become the residential area of poorer immigrants from Anatolia . Today Turks , Kurds and many Roma make up the population who came from Thrace , Anatolia, East and Southeast Anatolia after the 1970s and found their new home in Balat. The district borders on Fener in the east, and the Golden Horn forms a natural border in the north . To the west is the Ayvansaray district, which itself borders the Theodosian Land Wall. In the south lies Draman, one of the Islamic quarters of Istanbul.

In addition to the Ahrida Synagogue , the oldest synagogue in Istanbul, there are also some Greek and Armenian churches in Balat. In the center of Balat there are some supermarkets, shops for daily needs and pubs. The most famous pub was the Agora Meyhanesi, which was discontinued due to inheritance disputes after the accidental death of the owner (a Greek-born Istanbul resident). After years of vacancy, an artist has now set up his studio there.
