Rodrigo de Paula Pessoa (born November 29, 1972 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a Brazilian show jumper and Olympic champion .
Career
At the 2004 Olympic Games , he was Olympic champion in show jumping on Baloubet du Rouet . He benefited from the disqualification of Irishman Cian O'Connor , whose horse Waterford Cristal was doped. In 1996 and 2000 he had already won the bronze medal with the Brazilian team. At the World Equestrian Games in 1998 he won the individual gold medal. In 2006 he could not start because his horse Baloubet had been injured shortly before. But he took part as a coach of the Brazilian team.
In the years 1998, 1999 and 2000, he won consecutive Baloubet du Rouet , the World Cup Final Jumping . With Lianos Z he won the individual ranking of the World Equestrian Games in Rome in 1998.
In 2007 he also won the team gold medal and the individual silver medal with Rufus as a member of the Brazilian team at the Pan American Games, the continental championships of the American double continent. At the Pan American Games in 2011 he won team silver with Ashley .
In 1994 he won the Grand Prix at the CHIO Aachen , Germany's most important horse show, on LP Special Envoy .
From 2007 to 2011 he was President of the International Jumping Rider Club (IJRC), the advocacy group for show jumpers who are among the top 100 in the world rankings. His successor was the Spaniard Cayetano Martínez de Irujo , who held this position before 2007.
From 2014 to 2018 Rodrigo Pessoa was active representative on the FEI jumping committee . For the 2016 Summer Olympics in his home country, Pessoa was only nominated as a reserve rider. Disappointed about this, he gave up the reserve riding place in favor of Felipe Amaral.
As a team manager, Pessoa has been supporting the Irish show jumpers since the spring of 2017, for example, he is the team boss at Nations Cups. Even as a rider, he only competes in an average of less than 20 international tournaments per year.
Rodrigo Pessoa's facility is the “Haras de Ligny” in Fleurus near Brussels.
Private
The trainer and former show jumper Nelson Pessoa is his father.
In September 2009 Rodrigo Pessoa married the American show jumper Alexa Weeks, they have two daughters (born in 2011 and 2016). From his first marriage to show jumping rider Kery Potter, whom he married in June 2001, he also has a daughter who lives with her mother.
Awards
In January 2011, Pessoa was awarded the “ Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Diploma” by the International Sports Journalists Association AIPS as one of three athletes . This honored his fair sporting behavior, which he showed in the finals of the best four show jumpers with horse change at the 2010 World Equestrian Games . Here he gave his competitor Abdullah al-Sharbatly advice on how he should ride Rebozzo (Pessoa's horse) and on the course. Al-Sharbatly, for whom this was the first individual final at an international top level, won silver in the individual ranking; Pessoa missed the medal ranks as fourth.
At the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics , he was honored to be the flag bearer of the Brazilian team .
doping
At the 2008 Olympics he started with Rufus . He finished the individual ranking here with fifth place. However, during the Olympic Games it became known that Pessoa's horse had tested positive for nonivamide . Since at the time of the 2008 Olympic Equestrian Games, nonivamide, like capsaicin, was classified as an illegal medication or doping (on the legs, here as a pain-causing substance) depending on the area of application, it had to be clarified what the Pessoa case was. The FEI Tribunal could not prove a doping offense and sentenced Pessoa at the end of August 2008 to a four-and-a-half-month ban for illegal medication. Pessoa himself justified the nonivamide find on the one hand with the use of a nonivamide-containing ointment by the groom, on the other hand with the fact that Rufus and the horse of Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto , Picolien Zeldenrust (which had to be operated on during the Olympic Games), one Ice machine had to share and this resulted in pollution. At the same time he accused other riders (without naming names) of regularly taking manipulative measures on their horses. Rodrigo Pessoa appealed against the decision of the FEI Tribunal to the International Court of Sport (CAS) against the judgment. A ruling by the CAS in this case has not become known; the FEI assessed Pessoa as disqualified at the 2008 Olympic Games.
