Pierre Jonquères d'Oriola
Pierre Jonquères d'Oriola (born February 1, 1920 in Corneilla-del-Vercol ; † July 19, 2011 ibid) was a French show jumper .
Career
D'Oriola's father Joseph was already active as a show jumper before the Second World War . D'Oriola was also spurred on by the sporting success of his cousin Christian d'Oriola to his own sporting achievements.
He is one of the most successful show jumpers in history. He won at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and in 1964 in Tokyo , the individual competition. This makes Jonquères d'Oriola the only show jumper to have won the Olympic individual gold medal twice. In 1964 and 1968 he also won the silver medal with the French team.
In 1966 he became world champion show jumping in Buenos Aires . After this success he was accepted into the French Legion of Honor .
At the beginning of August 1972 he declared that he did not want to take part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich because he did not have a horse that could match the class of the German and Italian and "he did not want to be slaughtered."
