Thomas Frühmann (born January 28, 1951 in Vienna ) is an Austrian show jumper.

Career

Thomas Frühmann grew up as the son of a psychiatrist in Vienna. Supported by his mother, he concentrated on equestrian sport and began an apprenticeship with Ottokar Pohlmann in Munich at the age of 17 , himself an Olympian in eventing in 1960 . Frühmann's first great success was the Austrian state championship title in 1977 at the age of 26. Another eight national championship titles should follow, the last so far in 2013.

After working in Austria after completing his apprenticeship, he moved to Georg Ahlmann's stable (father of Christian Ahlmann ) in 1978 . During this time he took part in the Olympic replacement competitions for show jumpers in Rotterdam in 1980, which were held due to the Olympic boycott of many western countries. Together with the Austrian team (which also included the individual gold winner Hugo Simon ) he won the team bronze.

At Ahlmann's mediation, Frühmann became the ready successor of Heinrich-Wilhelm Johannsmann in the Römersee Stud of Gerhard Brenninkmeyer (then co-owner of C&A ) in Heiden . After Brenninkmeyer's death in 1984, Thomas Frühmann moved to Alwin Schockemöhle's stable .

1990 was a very successful year for Frühmann. After participating in the World Cup final in Dortmund, the Grandeur horse was followed by victory in the Grand Prix at the CHIO Aachen . Frühmann was the first Austrian to win this test. He won the German Jumping Derby in 1991 for the third time after 1988 and 1990, each with Grandeur .

1992 was also a very successful year for him: He won the World Cup final in Del Mar with Genius . The show jumper had the greatest success of his career in 1992 when he won the team silver medal at the Summer Olympics on Genius in Barcelona .

After successful years in the Schockemöhle stable, Frühmann moved back to Austria in 1995, and five years later his second marriage failed. Years followed in which he was only active in sport on a national level.

He made his comeback in 2004. One of his former wives bought the Westphalian gelding The Sixth Sense for him , which in 2006 was voted the best jumper in the world by the World Breeding Association. Another highly successful years in sport followed with victories in Grand Prix and World Cup competitions, in 2006 Frühmann won the overall ranking of the Riders Tour . After The Sixth Sense was injured in March 2010, Thomas Frühmann did not take part in international tournaments due to the lack of other top horses. A year later he returned to international sport with The Sixth Sense with a victory in the Silver Tour final of the CSIO Linz, in 2013 both won the Austrian State Championship .

In September 2016, Frühmann said goodbye to the now 20-year-old gelding The Sixth Sense from the great tournament sport. Frühmann himself increasingly wanted to work as a trainer, but did not give up riding yet.

Private

The Austrian was born in Vienna in 1951. He currently lives with his third wife in Niederneukirchen in Upper Austria. Frühmann has one child from his first marriage and two from his current marriage to Jacqueline.

Problems with doping guidelines

In 2000 he was suspected of doping for the first time. During a national control, the substance hydrochlorothiazide was found in him , which is a diuretic and is on the list of prohibited substances. Frühmann suffers from high blood pressure and has therefore been prescribed this drug since the mid-1990s; but neither he nor his doctor had reported this fact to the association. He was acquitted of the doping allegation by the Austrian Federal Association for Riding and Driving .

In 2005, the same substance was found again during a routine check by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Again, neither his doctor nor he reported to the FEI. After a long decision by the international federation, Frühmann received a reprimand from the FEI and was subsequently disqualified from the test, which is why he had to refund the prize money. No further punishment was given.
