Maimarkt tournament Mannheim
The Maimarkt-Tournament Mannheim is an international horse show that is held annually during the Mannheim Maimarkt in Mannheim . The tournament has been held since 1964, the venues are the MVV riding stadium and the MVV dressage stadium.
The organizer of the tournament is the Reiter-Verein Mannheim eV
Since 2014, the Maimarkt tournament has been the German Nations Cup tournament for dressage riders with disabilities (para dressage), internationally advertised as CPEDI 3 *. In addition, the main jumping competitions of the tournament are usually advertised as CSI 3 * and the dressage tests as CDI 4 * (until 2017 as CDI 3 *). There are also amateur jumping competitions (CSIAm-A and CSIAm-B) and jumping competitions for young horses (CSIYH 1 *). In addition to the international competitions , nationally advertised dressage and jumping competitions up to advanced level are also held .
Tournament history
After the Mannheim Maimarkt was relocated to Friedensplatz across from Luisenpark in 1962 , the idea of holding a horse show as part of the Maimarkt was born. With the help of the US Army, which was stationed in nearby Heidelberg, the previously unpaved area was turned into a riding arena as part of a pioneer exercise. The first Maimarkt tournament was held in May 1964.
While the jumping competitions took place on the new riding arena, the dressage competitions were still held on the grounds of the Mannheim Reiter-Verein. The most important jumping competition of the tournament was held in the first year of the tournament, the Badenia. After there was an amateur hunting race of the same name in Mannheim before the First World War, this tradition was continued and the main jumping test was named in the same way.
In 1985, with the Maimarkt, the tournament also moved to the new Maimarkt site in Mühlfeld. A new riding stadium was built for this purpose. With the new stadium in 1986 the German championships were held for the first time in the Mannheim riding stadium, initially for juniors and young riders; A year later, the German championships in dressage and show jumping were held here for the first time .
After the German championships, Mannheim regularly became the venue for other major equestrian events: three more German dressage and show jumping championships, the Bundeschampionat hosted twice, and the European show jumping championships in 1997 and 2007 . In the run-up to the European Championships in 2007, the riding stadium was expanded and modernized, behind the main stand a second tournament area of the same size was created, which is known as the MVV dressage stadium.
A world championship was also held on the Maimarkt site: in 2000, the Vaulting Championships took place in the Maimarkthalle, which was built in 1989 . In 2001 the Maimarkt tournament was the first stage of the newly created Riders Tour . In the interests of its independence, however, the tournament only took part in the tournament series this one time.
In addition to the special events, the Maimarkt tournament was always held in May, so that the 50th edition of the tournament was celebrated in 2013. In the previous year, the “Mannheim Horse Week” had over 50,000 spectators.
CSIO 2015
Since Aachen in August 2015 European championships in five equestrian disciplines hosted, was abandoned there on the implementation of the CHIO 2015 . Therefore, the German Nations Cup show jumping was re-awarded for this year, Mannheim was awarded the contract. Therefore, the 100th CSIO of Germany was held in the MVV riding stadium from July 16 to 19, 2015 .
program
Since 2000, the equestrian program during the Maimarkt has not only included the Maimarkt tournament, it has instead grown into an equestrian event spanning more than two weekends. This is known as the Mannheim Horse Week .
The program on the weekend before the Maimarkt tournament usually includes the "Rhein-Neckar ARENA Polo Cup" (2011 to 2013: "Maimarkt ARENA Polo Championship"), a polo tournament in which four or six teams are knocked out . System . The 2011 program also included a youth show jumping tournament. In previous years, various equestrian disciplines took place on this first weekend, such as driving tests until 2007 and western riding in 2008 and 2009 . In 2016, the dressage tests (which would otherwise have overlapped with the CDI 5 * at the Pferd International München-Riem and the German Dressage Derby in Hamburg) were brought forward to the first weekend, in return the polo tournament switched to the main weekend.
The actual program of the Maimarkt tournament begins almost a week later on Friday. On this first day mainly smaller jumping competitions as well as the Grand Prix de Dressage of the CDI are held in the MVV riding stadium. From the tournament Saturday, the program will be divided into the riding stadium and the dressage stadium, with all jumping competitions taking place in the riding stadium.
The CDI ends on the Sunday of the tournament and ends with the Grand Prix Freestyle at midday in the riding stadium . The first CPEDI tests for para-dressage riders begin the day before in the dressage stadium. There will also be a qualifying test for the Nuremberg Castle Cup on Sunday . The end of the day in the riding stadium on Sunday is the second most important jumping competition of the tournament, the Maimarkt Championship in Mannheim.
The Para-Dressage Nations Cup will be decided on the Monday of the tournament. The para-dressage riders will contest their freestyle competitions on the final Tuesday of the tournament, while the show jumping riders will take part in the Badenia on this day. This test, the Grand Prix of the CSI tournament, concludes the “Mannheim Horse Week”.
The most important exams
Dressage riding
For many years, the Grand Prix Spécial was the final and most difficult test of the dressage program at the Maimarkt tournament. In 2008, a Grand Prix Spécial was not held in favor of the FN Young Horse Grand Prix Series (which at that time was called the Media Cup). Even when the dressage classes were written internationally from 2011 onwards, the announcement of a Grand Prix Freestyle as the second highlight of the dressage tour was initially dispensed with. This has only been part of the program since 2013. Both exams were endowed with 10,000 euros in 2018.

Para-dressage
The Maimarkt tournament is one of the few tournaments in the world that announce international tests for dressage riders with disabilities (in 2014 there were fewer than 20 tournaments). As with international championships (European and World Championships as well as Paralympic Games), the athletes in the para-dressage sport in Mannheim compete in three different stages in each grade: the team competition, the championship test and a freestyle. The tests of para dressage riders have been held in Mannheim since 2003.
A premiere took place in May 2014: For the first time, a Para-Dressage Nations Cup was held outside of championships. Eight teams competed for this in Mannheim. For the team evaluation, as with championships, the results of the team competition and championship test are added together. Three or four riders form a team, with four riders the lowest overall result counts as the discarded result.
In 2007 the German Para Dressage Rider Championship was held as part of the Maimarkt tournament.

May market championship
The Maimarkt championship in Mannheim is the second most important and second highest endowed jumping competition of the tournament. The exam, held in memory of Hartwig Steenken , has been held since 1988 and takes place on the Sunday of each tournament. This is a jumping competition with jump-off in the S *** class, which was endowed with 30,000 euros in 2014.
In 2012, instead of the Maimarkt Championship, a “Mannheim Grand Prix” was held because the FEI refused to approve a Grand Prix on Tuesday.

Badenia has been part of the tournament since 1964, but has only been decided in an examination since 1966. In the previous two years, the Badenia consisted of two tests, a time competition and the Grand Prix.
Unlike most horse shows in Germany, the Grand Prix is not held on a Sunday, but on Tuesday. This May Market Tuesday is also the last day of the May Market and the May Market tournament. The test is a jumping competition with jump-off, the prize money in 2014 was around 60,000 euros.
