Werner Muff (born February 25, 1974 in Sursee , Canton Lucerne ) is a Swiss show jumper .

In May 2011 he was ranked 39th in the FEI's 124th world rankings . By November 2011, he slipped to 84th place. Werner Muff is a member of the Swiss elite show jumping squad in 2012.

Life and athletic career

Werner Muff grew up in an agricultural family, his father Werner Muff senior was a cavalryman alongside his job as a farmer . Werner Muff began riding his father's cavalry horse, and show jumping interested him from an early age. At the request of his parents, Muff did an apprenticeship at the Raiffeisenbank in Beromünster from 1989 to 1992 .

In 1993 he got the chance to work as a rider at Alois Fuchs in Wängi . He worked here for 18 months. From 1994 to 1996 he was employed by Thomas Fuchs in Bietenholz and from 1996 to 2000 by Manfred Birchler in Bilten . Here he also won his first Grand Prix with BB Cardinale . As a result, he also got the opportunity to ride Nations Cups.

After four years of self-employment in Thomas Fuchs' stable, he has been self-employed in Susanne Meier's stable since 2004. In the following years further national and international successes followed, many of them with Plot Blue . Among other things, he won the Swiss Cup final with horse swaps in 2005, 2006 and 2010. In 2006, he was also named “Rookie of the year”.

In 2012 he started his first Olympic Games in London and reached fourth place with the team. For the first time he became Swiss champion of show jumping in September 2015 with Pollendr .

Private

He is married and has a son. His cousin Theo Muff is also active as a show jumper on an international level.

criticism

In 2010 Muff won the Swiss Cup final in Ascona for the third time, a national test with horse change. There was criticism of Muff because he brought a very difficult horse to the test with Escorial V. Pius Schwizer , who also took part in this examination, is quoted as follows:

Escorial couldn't be managed. You can't ride such a buck. It was a risk of injury, especially for Annina Züger, who was only 18 years old . "

Muff himself comments on this:

Success is not really fun. Escorial is a sensitive horse that my competitors have had difficulties with. That just happens in a final with horse change. Perhaps some are now hurt in their honor. You can't just put everything on the horse. "

One week after the Swiss Cup final, both Pius Schwizer and Werner Muff took part in the Nations Cup in Hickstead as part of the Swiss team . This was considered to be almost the last chance to prevent Switzerland from relegating from the Meydan FEI Nations Cup . However, the Swiss team did not make it into the second round and finished ninth. National coach Rolf Grass blamed the dissatisfaction in the team since the Ascona Cup final. As a result, changing horses at the Swiss Cup final in Ascona was abolished and replaced by a two-round test.
