Oleksandr Romanovych Onyshchenko ( Ukrainian Олександр Романович Онищенко , English transcription Oleksandr Romanovych Onyshchenko ; born March  31, 1969 in Matveev Kurgan , Rostov Oblast , USSR Olympic athlete , politician and Russian multimillionaire from Ukraine ) is a Ukrainian multimillionaire .

Professional life and politics

Onyshchenko received his PhD in 1990 from the Higher Military Academy of Logistics. He then worked in the energy sector. Onyshchenko made a fortune with the Orion-Kiev natural gas trading company.

Since 2012 Onyshchenko has been a member of parliament for the 93rd constituency in the Supreme Council of Ukraine , where he was Deputy Chairman for Fuels and Energy, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety. In his first term of office from 2012 to 2014 he was a member of the “ Economic Development ” group, but belonged to the Party of Regions . From 2014 he was part of the “ People's Will ” faction .

He left Ukraine in 2017 after being charged with corruption.

In an interview with the Washington Times in 2017, Oleksandr Onyshchenko confirmed that he wanted to run for the Ukrainian presidency in 2019, but this did not happen.

In April 2018, his publication became Peter the Fifth. The true story of the Ukrainian dictator published, also translated into German. The book contains accounts of alleged corruption practices by Petro Poroshenko .

Criticism and controversy

Charge of tax evasion

In October 2007 Onyshchenko was arrested in Brussels and spent a few days in custody there, accused of forging documents and tax evasion. As a result of these allegations, three of his horses were confiscated for sale by the Belgian judiciary in 2012.

Corruption allegation

On December 13, 2016, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General Onyshchenko lifted his immunity on suspicion of corruption. He was accused, along with other officials, of having sold gas from the state gas company Ukrhaswydobuwannja at low prices to fictitious companies, who then sold the gas back to Ukrhazwydobuwannja at a higher market price. The difference of 120 million US dollars is said to have been skimmed off by the officials.

He then went into hiding abroad. At the end of July 2016, Onyshchenko announced that he lived in London and had applied for political asylum in the UK. In September 2016, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine applied to Interpol for a “ Red Noticeregarding the arrest and extradition of Onyshchenko. However, this was rejected by Interpol.

On November 28, 2019, Onyschtschenko was arrested at the police station in Achim near Bremen in Lower Saxony at the instigation of the Lower Saxony public prosecutor's office. He had previously traveled from Spain and entered the station to testify as a witness in a fraud case. An arrest warrant was issued against him from Ukraine for corruption. Onyshchenko was brought into extradition detention in the Oldenburg prison. In May 2020, the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court ruled that he could not be extradited to Ukraine, as the judges assumed that the conditions of detention there did not comply with international law. Onyshchenko was then released from custody. His defense lawyer in this matter was Peter Gauweiler . He criticized the arrest and assumed that the invitation to testify was just an excuse. The Higher Regional Court had already examined and rejected an extradition of Onyshchenko to Ukraine in February 2017.

Working with the FBI

At the end of 2017 Onyshchenko handed over material to the FBI , which was supposed to prove corruption by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko . These allegations have been denied by Poroshenko's office as "absolutely false" and "useful fiction of the suspect".

Peter the Fifth , 2019

Edition Ost , which is closely related to GDR officials, presented Onyschtschenko's book "Peter the Fifth" in several languages at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2018. In this publication Onyshchenko reports on the corrupt machinations of the Poroshenko presidency from personal experience.

Athlete and sports official

Onyshchenko has been riding since he was a child, but initially did not do it professionally. In 1998 he was elected Vice President of the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation. He then began to pursue equestrian sports professionally and in 2000 he bought a riding facility in Belgium.

From 2002 to 2013 Onyshchenko was President of the National Equestrian Federation of Ukraine; In 2005 he started implementing the plan to form a show jumping team for Ukraine that would be able to win medals at international championships. For this he equipped several Western European riders with good horses, but they had to take citizenship of the Ukraine.

World Equestrian Games 2006 and European Championship 2007

At the World Equestrian Games in Aachen , this team from Ukraine reached fourth place in the team ranking (0.01 points behind Germany, which won bronze). The team included the two Germans Björn Nagel and Katharina Offel as well as the Belgians Grégory Wathelet and Jean-Claude Van Geenberghe . The other riders he wanted to sign for his team included the Swiss Steve Guerdat , who had already ridden for Onyschtschenko for three months, the German Franke Sloothaak and the Danish Tina Lund . At the European Championships 2007, the team in the line-up Wathelet, Nagel, Van Geenberghe and Offel reached ninth place.

2008 Summer Olympics

Then began the decline of the Ukrainian team led by Onyshchenko. In 2007, Gregory Wathelet changed his citizenship again after selling his top horse Lantinus and has been riding for Belgium again since then. In 2008 Katharina Offel decided not to start at the 2008 Olympic Games because of her motherhood , so that the Ukraine team threatened to collapse. Notwithstanding this, she did take part in the games. The team reached 10th place in the team ranking. In addition to Van Geenberghe, Nagel and Offel, Onyshchenko also took part as a rider. With Codar , however, he was eliminated in the team competition and is therefore on the 68th place in the individual ranking. Due to the lack of support, other riders left him, Offel and Nagel continue to compete for the Ukraine.

World Equestrian Games 2010

At the 2010 World Equestrian Games , he provided horses to Björn Nagel and Cassio Rivetti, who previously started for Brazil . Katharina Offel was the third team rider on this team.

2012 Summer Olympics

With a view to the 2012 Summer Olympics , Onyschtschenko acquired several top horses in late 2010 / early 2011, such as Campione CH (previously ridden by Werner Muff ), Vivant (previously ridden by Chris Chugg ) and Spender S (previously ridden by Jos Lansink ). However, the Olympic Games in London did not go as hoped for Onyshchenko, his team was eliminated in the first round (14th place). He himself delivered with Comte d'Arsouilles with 18 penalty points the result of the cancellation for the team and therefore only came in a lower position in the individual standings.

Nations Cup season 2013 to 2015

The Nations Cup season for Ukraine was significantly more successful than the Olympic Games, the team won the European Promotional League and thus rose to the Europa League 1 of the Nations Cup 2013 . Onyschtschenko used the year 2013 to reorganize his team: After Björn Nagel left the Ukrainian team in October 2012, Onyshchenko signed double Olympic champion Ulrich Kirchhoff . He also hired René Tebbel as a trainer and acquired a riding facility in Herzlake, Lower Saxony, as a base for the team.

While Oleksandr Onyshchenko was not used in the 2013 season in the Nations Cup of the Europa League 1, he was part of the Ukrainian squad in the 2014 Nations Cup season in Falsterbo and Dublin. However, Ukraine only came tenth overall in that season and was relegated to European League 2. At the World Equestrian Games in 2014 Onyshchenko competed with Valentino Velvet . The team came in ninth place here, in the individual ranking it came in 54th place out of 150 participants.

In addition to being a trainer, René Tebbel started as a rider for the Ukraine from the beginning of 2015. In August 2015, a Ukrainian team (without Onyshchenko's active participation) secured victory in the Eastern Europe / Central Asia Olympic qualification test in Šamorín and thus received a team starting place for the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the end of the year Katharina Offel announced that she was no longer for the Ukraine to start. On May 1, 2016, René Tebbel handed over the national coaching position for Ukraine to Markus Fuchs .

2016 Summer Olympics

At the beginning of July 2016, the Ukrainian Minister of Youth and Sports, Ihor Zhdanov , announced that, due to the investigation, Oleksandr Onyshchenko's participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics was not an option. Onyshchenko had previously sold 44 of his horses to a Paul Schockemöhle corporation to prevent confiscation. Since the owners of the horses at the Olympic Games must come from the same state as the riders, the riders intended for Rio (Tebbel, Kirchhoff, Rivetti and Szentirmai) were involved in their best horses. This ensured the participation of the Ukrainian team in the Olympic Games.

European Championships 2017

Oleksandr Onyshchenko himself continues to compete in international horse shows even in exile. According to René Tebbel, participation in the 2017 European Championships did not come about because Onyschtschenko's horse was not fit.
