The main stadium is a riding stadium in the Soers sports park in Aachen . The 150 × 120 meter interior is the venue for the jumping competitions .

history

With around 40,000 spectators, the main stadium is one of the largest riding stadiums in the world. The owner is the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein . Together with the Deutsche Bank Stadium ( dressage riding ), the Albert-Vahle-Halle ( vaulting ) and the driving stadium, it forms the tournament grounds of the CHIO, which attracts around 576,000 visitors to the Aachen Soers every year. The modernized jumping arena was opened on August 23, 2005 with the Grand Prix of Aachen. As the first winner, the German rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum was allowed to enter the list of winners.

CHIO

The CHIO Aachen is an international equestrian tournament ( Concours Hippique International Officiel ) that has been held in Aachen since 1924 . According to the regulations of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), each country may only host one CHIO. Thus the CHIO Aachen is the only event of its kind in Germany. The organizer is the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein, which was founded in 1898. The venue is the riding stadium in the Soers Sports Park. In addition to being named according to the nomenclature for tournaments , the CHIO has been held under the self-chosen name of the World Equestrian Festival since 1992 .

Open Air Pop Festival

From July 10th to 12th, 1970, around 50,000 visitors came to the Reitstadion for the first (and only) Aachen Open Air Pop Festival, which at that time was something special in West Germany . National and international greats performed, including: Deep Purple , Pink Floyd , Taste , If , Hardin & York , Livin 'Blues, Champion Jack Dupree , T. Rex , Golden Earring , Kraftwerk , Caravan , Can , Kevin Ayres, Raw Material , Krokodil, Free , Mungo Jerry , Keef Hartley Band , Amon Düül II , The Spencer Davis Group , Quintessence and the Aachen band Truss.

Renovation 2005

The stadium was modernized for the 2006 World Equestrian Games . In addition to the new construction of three grandstands and a judges' tower, the stadium was also equipped with a floodlight system, which also enables riding events in the evening and thus at prime time .

In total, the renovation cost a little more than planned at 17 million euros. The Federal Ministry of the Interior contributed EUR 2.1 million and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia EUR 7.5 million. The Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein raised the remaining amount itself.

During the opening ceremony, the then Federal Minister of the Interior, Otto Schily, emphasized : "This means that Aachen has the most beautiful and most modern riding stadium in the world". It is a venial sin that the construction costs have exceeded one million euros. The federal government will endeavor to compensate for the additional costs . "
