The breed is also known as the Iberian horse and is mainly bred in the Extremadura and Andalusia regions . PRE horses have a proven parentage ( stud book and licensing ).

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The exterior corresponds to that of a classic Andalusian. Its traditional color is white (“mold”), but the colors “brown”, “dark brown” or “black”, rarely also “fox”, can occur. Foxes were only allowed to breed in 2003. Checks are still not recognized by PREs. In brown and black horses occasional white can badge occur. The elegant head consists of triangular shaped eyes, ears of medium proportion and wide nostrils . The even neck is sometimes curved with a good attachment to the trunk. The withers are well separated, the croup is slightly sloping and the tail is set deep and usually very lush. The chest is long and deep with gently curved ribs. The shoulders are long and well positioned. The slender limbs have sturdy bones . The horse has long and muscular forearms. The tubes are short and firm.

Breeding history

The breed name has only existed since it was recognized by the Spanish breeders' association in 1912. These are Iberian horses ( Andalusians ) with proven origins from recognized Spanish breeding lines. Like many other breeds, the Iberian horses , which were originally closely related to the Berber , were also grafted with Arabs and English thoroughbreds . Since the beginning of the 20th century, with the introduction of the "matriculation register of stallions and mares of pure Spanish blood" ( Registro-Matrícula de caballos y yeguas de pura sangre española ), from which the name of the breed is derived, has been documented and more precisely regulated. Since 1967 the breeding of the Portuguese horse breed Lusitano, originally recorded in the same stud book, has been continued separately under the name Puro Sangue Lusitano . Since 1989 there have been separate studbooks with the breed name Pura Raza Menorquina (PRM) for the black Menorquins, which used to be a sub- breed of the PRE . The breeding of the PRE is handled extremely strictly, the stud book was kept for a long time by the Spanish Ministry of Defense. Only stallions and mares that are registered here and have completed and passed a licensing are allowed to breed. Spanish horses, which cannot be designated as PRE horses due to a lack of admission and the corresponding papers, continue to be referred to as “Andalusians” in the indefinite usage.

In Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, the Carthusian monks started their own horse breeding, supported by the royal family and influential nobles . This is considered to be the beginning of the breeding history of the famous Spanish Carthusian horses ( Cartujanos ), which are considered a particularly noble sub-breed of the PRE.

Studbook

The stud book was from 1912 to 2006 by the Directorate General for horse and Remontenzucht of Armed Forces ( Dirección General de Cría Caballar y Remonta out), which until now responsible for the rearing of horses military department of the Spanish Ministry of Defense. In 2006, the stud bookkeeping was taken over by the largest Spanish breeders' association, ANCCE, which keeps the studbook today.

Breeding in Germany

In Germany, the horses of the Pura Raza Española were registered in the original Spanish stud book of ANCCE through the "Association of Friends and Breeders of the Reiner Horse, Spanish Race eV" (VFZPRE). This has not been possible since 2015.
