The Equitana (proper spelling: EQUITANA, subtitles: World Equestrian Fair) is the largest equestrian show in the world. It has taken place every two years at the Essen Exhibition Center since the first event in 1972 . With around 860 exhibitors from all areas of equestrian sport, Equitana is the most important horse fair in Germany. Products from all areas of equestrian sport are presented at Equitana, for example horse trailers , western saddles and dressage boots . 1,000 horses, 2,000 events and 9 shows - like the HOP TOP Show take place during the fair.

The Equitana is a so-called special interest fair. Of the approximately 200,000 visitors, more than 40,000 are trade visitors . 90 percent of them are active riders. Over 70 percent of the visitors are horse owners themselves. The visitors include trainers, competition riders, stable owners, horse breeders and veterinarians. The offer is also aimed at recreational riders and horse fans.

history

The fair was founded in 1971 and took place for the first time on April 27, 1972 in five halls of Messe Essen, which was frequented by 170 exhibitors and 51,000 visitors. Equitana has been held every two years since 1973. In the 1970s and 1980s, the fair recorded steadily increasing numbers of exhibitors and visitors. In 1989 Equitana was sold to Blenheim International Deutschland GmbH in Düsseldorf, a predecessor of Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH. Reed Exhibitions has been organizing the fair since 2001.

Events

The so-called Hop Top Show takes place on four fair evenings . The stallion breeding show has been taking place since 2005 . Breeding stallions from warmblood and riding pony breeding will be presented.

Horse breeds

Around 1000 horses and 40 different breeds are on site during the Equitana. A special focus is on the presentation of exotic horse breeds. In 1972, for example, the Quarter Horse , which was largely unknown in Europe at the time, was presented at the Equitana. The Shire Horse , Friesian horses , Akhal-Teke , Russian Orlov trotters and Andalusians were also presented on the exhibition stage. Interest groups from Welsh to Fjord to Connemara and Dartmoor also presented themselves at the fair .

Sponsor

The first ideal sponsor of the Equitana was the German Rider and Driver Association. Today the German Equestrian Association is a partner and sponsor. The supporters also included Messe Essen and the Rheinische Pferdestammbuch.

Equitana Open Air

Since 1998, Equitana Open Air has also taken place every two years in the even, Equitana-free years. As an open-air fair, it is increasingly taking up mass sport . At the fair, around 250 exhibitors show the entire range of horses. Together with several partner associations, Equitana Open Air offers numerous competitions in various disciplines in the popular sports area. The program at the Galopprennbahn Neuss includes 200 events on seven riding arenas. On the weekend after Whitsun , around 1,000 horses and riders, 50 horse breeds and 40,000 visitors come together here every two years.

Equitana Australia

Equitana Australia has been held under license in the Asia-Pacific region since 1999 . Until 2011, the venue was initially Melbourne , where the fair takes place every two years on four days with around 300 national and international exhibitors and around 50,000 visitors. Since 2011, Sydney has been another location in the odd years.
