The term equine encephalomyelitis covers various viral diseases in horses that damage the brain and spinal cord ( encephalomyelitis ). They are zoonoses and therefore notifiable animal diseases .

In a broader sense, other flavivirus infections ( West Nile virus infection, Louping Ill ), rabies and Borna's disease also belong to the neurotropic viral diseases that occur in horses. Rabies is also required to be reported, and Borna disease must be reported.
