Riders Tour 2016

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DKB-Riders Tour 2016 was the 16th season of the Riders Tour , an international show jumping tournament series .

The program of the Riders Tour in 2016 comprised six special tests at CSI 3 * and 4 * tournaments in Germany. The Riders Tour was organized by a company of the same name, whose managing director is Paul Schockemöhle .

For the seventh time, Deutsche Kreditbank was the title sponsor of the series. The new main sponsors of the tournament series were BEMER Int. AG and mauser einrichtungssysteme GmbH & Co. KG.

Course of the tournament series

The tournaments of the 2016 Riders Tour season took place between April 20 and November 13. Its size corresponded to the season of the previous year.

The special tests were the grand prizes of the tournaments. In the German show jumping and dressage derby , the jumping derby was the Riders Tour rating test.

With the exception of the German Jumping Derby, the valuation tests were announced as jumping competitions with two different rounds . The penalty points were not taken over from the first round, so the announcement (apart from the starting order in the second round) largely corresponded to a jumping competition with a winning round. The best quarter of the starters in the first round qualified for the second round. If more than the best quarter remained error-free in the first round, they were all allowed to start in the second round of the test.

The end of the season was the final tournament in Munich, which was upgraded to a CSI 4 * tournament. The Munich Grand Prix was a normal special stage. However, in order to be included in the overall ranking at the end of the season, the riders must take part in the final. If this was not the case, they were not taken into account in the final overall ranking.

The exams

1st examination: Hagen aTW

The season started with the Grand Prix of the CSI 4 * tournament " Horses & Dreams " in Hagen am Teutoburg Forest . As one of the first tournaments of the “green season” 2016 in Germany, it took place from April 20th to April 24th.

In the second round of the test, eleven pairs of participants competed, all of whom had made no mistakes in the first round. Six of these riders and their horses made no mistakes in the second round, so the winner had to be determined based on the time required. Two starters managed to stay under 45 seconds, the victory went to Philipp Weishaupt with the tall Hanoverian gelding Chico . In second place came Copperfield and Philip Rüping, for whom the result, according to their own statement, was absolutely above his expectations. With a third place, Taizo Sugitani recommended himself for the Summer Olympics , which started around 100 days later , because Hagen had been selected as a sighting for the Japanese show jumpers. At his first international tournament since returning from his annual stay in the United States, André Thieme also made no mistakes in the Grand Prix , finishing fourth with Conthendrix .

2nd exam: Hamburg

The German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby was held in Hamburg from May 4th to 8th, 2016 . The German Jumping Derby held on the last day of the tournament was the second stage of the Riders Tour 2016.

In the normal round of the derby, 31 pairs started, 20 of them crossed the finish line. While the number of nine pairs, which is quite high for the jumping derby, only got four penalty points in the course of the 1230 meter long course, none of the participants managed to remain completely without mistakes. This made it necessary to jump off the four-fault rider. In the jump-off, after two riders with nine and eight penalty points respectively, Billy Twomey and the 13-year-old gelding Diaghilev managed to stay clear in a fast time of 49.96 seconds. Three other riders also managed a clean jump-off: Janne Friederike Meyer , André Thieme and Nigel Coupe. However, since no one else achieved a time of less than 50 seconds, Twomey won the jumping derby. It was the first foreign rider to win this test since 1997 and the first Irish win since 1981.

3rd exam: Wiesbaden

Traditionally on the Whitsun weekend and thus one week after the German Jumping and Dressage Derby, the International Whitsun tournament took place in Wiesbaden . The Riders Tour special stage, the Grand Prix of the state capital Wiesbaden, was held on the afternoon of Whit Monday.

In the first round of the Riders Tour test, ten starter pairs remained without errors, so that the three fastest horse-rider pairs with four penalty points were among the best quarter of the participants and made it to the second round. The winner of the qualifying test held the day before, the Colombian Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo , was also one of the most successful riders in the Grand Prix and came fourth with Admara without a mistake. As in the previous year, Holger Wulschner came in third, he had started here with the Hanoverian gelding Skipper . For the second time this season Philip Rüping came second in a Riders Tour special stage. The victory and one of his most important successes in his career so far went to Patrick Stühlmeyer, who competed here with the 13-year-old stallion Lacan .

4th exam: Münster

After a three-month break, the Riders Tour season continued with the winner's tournament in Münster . The CSI 4 * tournament was held from August 27th to August 30th, one week after the Olympic Show Jumping competitions .

In the second round of the Grand Prix, six out of thirteen riders with their horses made no mistakes. The decision to win was extremely close, the times of the three best riders were only three tenths of a second apart. The victory went to Marcus Ehning, who was able to celebrate a success with Pret a Tout here after the failure of his stallion Cornado NRW shortly before the start of the Olympic Games .

5th exam: Paderborn

Two weeks after the winners' tournament, the fifth stage of the Riders Tour as part of the Paderborn Challenge was held in Paderborn . The CSI 3 * tournament was held on the Paderborn Schützenplatz from September 8th to September 11th, 2016.

Marcus Ehning was the first of the eleven riders to start the second round. He showed a brisk ride with the 11-year-old stallion Comme il faut , he crossed the finish line in 41.12 seconds without any mistakes. This time put the following riders under great pressure. Despite a torn tendon on his knee, André Thieme was the first rider whose time was approaching the Ehnings, he made no mistakes with Conthendrix , but was over two seconds slower than Marcus Ehning. The 19-year-old Lucas Porter, trained by Jeroen Dubbeldam , took second place . With the mare B Once Z , taken over by Katharina Offel at the end of 2015 , he was less than two seconds slower than the leader. Philip Rüping was the last to start in the jump-off. With Copperfield he was as fast as Marcus Ehning on the course (41.50 seconds), but a mistake at the last obstacle threw him back to seventh place. With this second victory in a row, Ehning was able to extend his lead in the Riders Tour.

6. Exam: Munich

The final stage of the season was the Munich Indoors Grand Prix . This CSI 4 * tournament, which takes place in Munich's Olympiahalle, was held in 2016 from November 10th to November 13th. In order to be placed in the final Riders Tour overall ranking, participation in the Munich Grand Prix was essential for the riders.

In the first round of the jumping competition with obstacle heights of up to 1.60 meters, ten out of 48 riders with their horses made no mistakes. With this, the two fastest riders filled the starting field of the second round with four penalty points, the best quarter of the participants. With his qualification for the second round, Marcus Ehning secured victory in the overall Riders Tour ranking. Thieme also managed to get into the second lap with a flawless ride in the first lap from his direct pursuers André Thieme and Philip Rüping .

In the jump-off, the second obstacle, an oxer , turned out to be the source of the error: the course builders had provided a white plank at the top, while the (rear) oxer bar was dark. Of the first six riders in the jump-off, four got a fault on this white plank, all six crossed the finish line with faults. Only Mario Stevens succeeded as the seventh participant in the jump-off without making mistakes. It seemed that the knot had "burst": the following starters, the Austrian Christian Rhomberg and the Upper Bavarian show jumper Maximilian Schmid, each made no mistakes and took the lead with the fastest possible time. While Marcus Ehning with Cristy and Charlotte Mordasini with Romane du Theil both crossed the finish line with mistakes, Markus Brinkmann was the last starter to stay clear. With his gelding Dylon , he tackled the jump-off course at a slower pace and came in fourth. The victory in the Grand Prize endowed with 90,000 euros went to the 26-year-old Maximilian Schmid and his ten-year-old gelding Chacon, who was bred at the Lewitz stud .
