action
John Felton, a real estate agent who has just been fired, comes home to find a note on his door saying his house is about to be foreclosed. He goes to his house, where his wife Joanie and his children Sam and John Jr. await him with a surprise birthday party. But because he is annoyed by the notice of forced sale and the notice of termination, the three of them go to a park. The relationship with his wife - already strained due to his infidelity - suffers because of his lack of income.
A short time later, John is disturbed by a knock on the door: A man who calls himself Richie has apparently broken down in front of his door with his car and is now asking him to push it to get it running again. When John pushes the car, it backfires and injures John's leg.
Richie makes John an offer to drive him to the hospital, which John finally accepts, forgetting his wallet and mobile phone in the house. The two of them stop at a gas station to refuel. When the clerk who was filling up the car was acting rude in Richie's opinion, he went to the store, supposedly to pay there. However, John sees in the rearview mirror that the customers in the gas station are behaving strangely, even if he doesn't know what the reason is at this point.
The two drive on until Richie stops at a bar. John, who doesn't want to have a drink with him, goes to a cell phone shop to call Joanie. The local employee Rhonda, however, refuses to use one of the telephones with reference to the telephone in the bar next door and only insults him.
In the bar, John meets his former boss Trevor and Tammy Strate, the woman he cheated on his wife with. Tammy, Trevor's ex-girlfriend, left this for John, for which he then fired John.
When police cars appear shortly afterwards, Richie, whose car has meanwhile been towed, wants John and Tammy to drive him home in Tammy's car. He plays with the baseball bat that Rhonda had previously threatened John with and which now apparently has blood and hair on it. After a while, the three of them are harassed by a trucker in the car and finally forced to stop. The trucker and John get out, with John trying to clarify the situation, but the trucker wants to beat him up or even kill him, believing that John killed Rhonda, the trucker's girlfriend.
Richie, who has been driving on in the meantime, runs over the trucker. It turns out that Richie is an ice cold psychopath who killed Rhonda and before that everyone in the gas station. John suspects this, but the three drive on. Meanwhile, the two detectives Frank and Latisha investigate the crime scene in the gas station, suspecting John to be the culprit.
After a stop at a farm where Richie kills the owner, her grandson and a police officer, Tammy escapes. John, who is slower due to his knee injury, is finally caught again by Richie after trying to escape. When John asks Richie to let him go, Richie grants this, but indicates that he will now go to John's family.
John is eventually arrested by Frank, who interrogates John but doesn't believe his story. Richie murders three other people in a diner during the interrogation and announces over the radio to one of the victims, a police officer, that he shot the perpetrator, posing as the police officer himself. When this becomes known and Tammy also confirms John's story, John is released and picked up by his family.
A short time later, Frank and Latisha notice that the perpetrator was not shot in the diner and they suspect that he is now on his way to John's house.
In fact, he's already there, forcing John to honor the invitation to eat and get to know John's wife. Over dinner, he explains why exactly he knocked at John's in the first place: His wife Joanie is having an affair and has set Richie as a hit man on John in order to get the money for the life insurance. John then attacks his wife, attacking him with a knife that she had hidden behind her back. He manages to snatch it from her and attack Richie with it. He defends himself and jumps with John through the window into the pool that is being built behind John's house and is full of water from the rain.
After a short scramble, Richie gets the upper hand, but is then shot by Latisha, who has meanwhile arrived at John's house. John sends the police away again without arresting Joanie.
During the night Joanie asks John if everything will be fine. John turns off the light without saying a word. Finally you can hear him whistling the song that Richie had whistled during the drive.
criticism
Meeting Evil gets a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 9 reviews. The German film website kino.de judged that Luke Wilson was playing a “normal guy who was thrown off course” in this “exciting road movie that starts like a psychodrama”. It goes on to say that the "brisk riot film enjoyment would not be complete without Samuel L. Jackson as the jovial murder pilot" who "depopulates entire restaurants". The film magazine Cinema wrote: "Unfortunately, the orgy of violence does not win any new facets from the nightmare of evil breaking into the ideal world." In conclusion, it says: "Well-made, but conventional ripper."
