Von Barnekow spoke out in "The training of the show jumping horse" for moderation in the assembling exercises for show jumpers.

“This type of work, which is quite difficult for the average rider, is mostly applied and carried out incorrectly. (...) As in the walk and trot, the main thing remains to walk on the long rein with a long neck with the nose carried in front of the vertical, consciously renouncing the straightening with strong bending of the hindquarters. Barnekow joined the SS in 1934 . Just one year later he realized that the only way to successfully prepare for the Olympic Games in Berlin was to switch to the Wehrmacht. He therefore asked for his release from the SS and prepared for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in the Wehrmacht's Hanover cavalry school . At the equestrian competitions he won the gold medal in team jumping on "Nordland" together with Kurt Hasse on "Tora" and Heinz Brandt on "Alchemist". In 1938 he rejoined the SS to continue his equestrian career for the SS main riding school in Munich .
