Western European League 2013/2014 (show jumping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping 2013/2014 (Longines FEI World Cup ™ Jumping 2013-2014, Western European League) was the 36th season of the Western and Central European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping . The World Cup is the most important tournament series in the indoor season in the Western European League.

Course of the tournament series

The 2013/2014 season was the first to be sponsored by the Swiss watch manufacturer Longines . This year the league comprised only ten stations: as in the previous year, Lyon was a tournament from the Western European League World Cup final location, and the CHI Geneva renounced its World Cup status in favor of the “ Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping ”. The Indoor Brabant tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch also signed a sponsorship agreement with Rolex in October 2013 and was eliminated from the Western European League.

All of these league tournaments were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping. They were marked with the suffix -W (i.e. CSI 5 * -W) to identify them as World Cup tournaments.

In the 2013/2014 season, the Western European League stretched from October 13th to March 2nd. The best 18 riders in the Western European League and possibly additional participants (“extra competitors”) qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals .

The World Cup special stages took place on Sunday afternoons and occasionally on Saturday evenings. They were advertised as a jumping competition with a single jump- off, the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. The endowment for these tests was at least 100,000 each .

media

The FEI broadcast the World Cup competitions of the Western European League for a fee via its Internet portal FEI TV. The World Cup competitions were mostly broadcast live on television in the host country, while the other competitions of the Western European League were also broadcast live with a time delay in individual European countries.

The pan-European dissemination of the exams of the Western European League took place from October to December 2013, unlike in previous seasons, at Eurosport no more than 60-minute summary. Instead, only brief summaries of the results were shown in the Wednesday evening program, which continues to be supported by Rolex. Since January 2014, the World Cup competitions have been shown in a 60-minute summary on the day of the test.

The exams

1st test: Oslo

The first World Cup competition in the Western European League traditionally takes place in Oslo . The Oslo Horse Show was held from October 10th to 13th, 2013 in the Telenor Arena . The world cup competition was held on October 13th from 12:30 p.m.

Nine out of 40 participants reached the jump-off. Seven of these riders were again without mistakes, so that time was the decisive factor for victory. Scott Brash and his eleven-year-old gelding Sanctos won ahead of Steve Guerdat with Nino des Buissonnets with a clear lead of over two seconds . Marcus Ehning and his stallion followed in third place with another one second gap. The test was endowed with 106,500 euros as well as a car from the test sponsor Land Rover .

The Italian stage of the Western European Show Jumping League took place from November 7th to 10th, 2013 as part of the Fieracavalli. The venue was the Veronafiere in Verona . The world cup competition started on November 10th around 2:30 pm.

In the first round of the course built by Uliano Vezzani, 25 out of 40 starters had a result of four or less penalty points, twelve of them were clear and thus made it into the jump-off. As the first rider in the jump-off, Luca Maria Moneta and his gelding Neptune Brecourt showed a fast, faultless lap with which he stayed in the lead for six rides. First Christian Ahlmann and Aragon Z were half a second faster than Moneta without mistakes and thus took the lead. The last starter pair of the jump-off, Scott Brash and Ursula XII , could endanger Ahlmann's victory. They didn't make a mistake, but were nine hundredths of a second slower and came in second.

The fourth evaluation test of the Western European League 2013/2014 will be held as part of the Stuttgart German Masters . The tournament was held from November 13th to 17th, 2013. The Grand Prix, which represented the World Cup special test in Stuttgart, took place on the afternoon of November 18th (from 2:30 p.m.).

In the first round of the test, nine riders failed to make any mistakes. Two riders had only one time penalty, including Maurice Tebbel , who only moved into the starting field shortly before the start of the tournament due to Christian Ahlmann's decision not to start .

In the jump-off of the faultless riders, the lead changed almost after every ride. Hans-Dieter Dreher made no mistakes with Embassy II in 36.27 seconds. After him, four more riders started: Edwina Tops-Alexander and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum did not take full risks with their horses and came in sixth and seventh respectively in the end. Roger Yves Bost and Myrtille Paulois had a drop in the jump-off and the last rider, Ludger Beerbaum with Chaman , could not come close to Dreher's time. For the man from Baden-Württemberg, this was the first victory in the Stuttgart Grand Prix.

After the first round, 23 horse-rider pairs had a result of four or less penalty points. Eleven of them made no mistakes, which was almost exactly a quarter of the starting field. Three riders gave up in the first round.

Lars Nieberg and Leonie W were the first of the eleven qualified riders to compete in the jump-off. With a good clean lap they took the lead and stayed there until about halfway through the jump-off. Markus Renzel was the second rider in the jump-off, with Cassydy he was clear , but a little slower than Nieberg, in the final result he came fourth. Roger-Yves Bost managed to take the lead from Nieberg. With Myrtille Paulois he finished without mistakes in a time of 40.78 seconds. 8th exam: Zurich

For the sixth time the CSI Zurich was a world cup tournament of the Western European League. The in Zurich he Hallenstadion discharged tournament took place in 2014 from 24th to 26th of January. The World Cup competition called Classic was held on the afternoon of January 26, 2014.

The allowed time in the first round was a challenge for many riders: Nine out of 38 participants did not stay within the allowed time. A time penalty prevented three of them from entering the jump-off. New horse-rider pairs qualified for the jump-off with a faultless round.

In the jump-off, Joe Clee was the first to make no mistakes. Until about halfway through the jump-off he remained the only faultless starter, then Christian Ahlmann managed to remain without faults, but he could not come close to Clee's time. With the nine-year-old gelding Toulago , Pius Schwizer managed to take the lead with his third fault-free ride in the jump-off. Nobody came close to this performance, so Schwizer won the World Cup.

9th test: Bordeaux

In the 2013/2014 season, only one tournament of the Western European League was held in France. The ninth stage of the Western European League was held as part of Jumping International de Bordeaux . The tournament took place from February 7th to 9th, 2014 in the Parc de Expositions de Bordeaux . In contrast to most world cup tournaments, the world cup jumping test did not take place on the final day, but on Saturday evening.

In the rather long first round of the test (the riders each needed around 75 to 80 seconds for the ride), the allowed time played a subordinate role, none of the 37 starters received time penalties. Overall, a good third of the participants (13 horse-rider pairs) managed to qualify for the sprint, which is above average.

Marco Kutscher was not very lucky with Cash as the first starter in the jump-off, with eight penalty points he came in 13th in the end. The second starter of the jump-off, however, managed a faultless lap, Joe Clee mastered the jump-off course with Diablesse de Muze in 38.20 seconds. The leadership was taken from him by Billy Twomey , who in turn lost it to Pius Schwizer. Towards the end of the jump-off, Schwizer's time could be beaten twice without mistakes: Roger-Yves Bost took the lead with the mare Myrtille Paulois , but then had to give up victory to the penultimate starter pair - Marcus Ehning and Cornado NRW .

10th test: Gothenburg

The tenth and final evaluation test of the Western European League 2013/2014 took place at the venue for the 2013 World Cup finals. The Göteborg Horse Show was held from February 27th to March 2nd, 2014.

In the first round of the Gothenburg World Cup, 18 starters got a result of four penalty points, ten pairs of starters failed to make mistakes and qualified for the jump-off. With a time penalty, Edwina Tops-Alexander narrowly missed the jump-off.

In the jump-off, seven horse-rider pairs managed to make no mistakes. The best result and thus the victory had Nicola Philippaerts, who competed with the eleven-year-old mare Donatella-N . A few hours earlier, Philippaerts had already won the first jumping competition of the tournament Sunday in Gothenburg. In second place in the World Cup competition came Marcus Ehning, who with Plot Blue was only two hundredths of a second slower than Nicola Philippaerts. With this placement, Ehning secured first place in the final ranking of the Western European League before the World Cup finals.

Overall rating

The overall ranking is used to determine which 18 riders from the states in the Western European League qualify for the final. In addition, other riders from other countries can qualify for the World Cup finals via the Western European League, provided they live in the Central / Western European League. Each rider can collect evaluation points in a maximum of six tests, further evaluation points are canceled.

The riders can also collect points in the North American World Cup (see "others" in the table below). Rating points from other World Cup leagues in the world, however, are not transferred to the Western European League.

The regulations can be found in the main article on the Show Jumping World Cup .
