Herwig Brunner

Herwig Brunner (born April 21, 1942 in Oberschützen ) is an Austrian biochemist. From 1994 to 2007 he was director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering and the Institute for Interfacial Engineering at the University of Stuttgart . Since 2016 he has been CEO of the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation for the Promotion of the Life Sciences in Weilheim in Upper Bavaria .

Live and act

Brunner studied biochemistry and microbiology at the Vienna University of Technology . This was followed by a university assistantship at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna . With the dissertation Continuous Fermentation of Antibiotic-Producing Fungal Mutants , he was awarded a Dr. techn. PhD. From 1972 to 1994 he held several positions at the Boehringer Mannheim company , including research and division manager for biotechnology .

From May 1994 to December 2007 Brunner was director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering (IGB) and the Institute for Interfacial Engineering (IGVT) at the University of Stuttgart . Brunner was a member of the board from October 1993 to September 2016 and has been CEO of the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation since October 2016. As a non-profit recognized foundation under Bavarian law, this takes care of the promotion of young scientists in biotechnology and genetic engineering (life sciences).

In addition to membership in various international advisory boards, he was an advisor to the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology and, from October 2009 to September 2012, chairman of the University Council at the University of Hohenheim .
