The TagesWoche was a Swiss newspaper from Basel . It was published online every day and in print once a week on Friday.
The creation of the newspaper, the first edition of which appeared on October 28, 2011, took place against the background of controversial events at the Basler Zeitung . The publisher, the Foundation for Media Diversity, saw the spectrum of opinion in Basel as endangered and wanted to expand it again.
On November 5, 2018, the Foundation for Media Diversity announced that the TagesWoche would be discontinued. The last issue was published on November 16, 2018.
concept
The TagesWoche was conceived as a weekly newspaper and appeared on Friday. Between two print editions, daily updated reports appeared online on the Internet, which could be accessed free of charge:
« The world in the 21st century needs media from the 21st century. »
Since May 2013, the online area has been given even greater weighting, with its own slogan being “online first”.
After the four-year start-up financing by the Foundation for Media Diversity, the financing should be secured through newspaper subscriptions, kiosk sales and advertising revenues.
The TagesWoche had a regional focus, but also wanted to report on national and international events. In addition to using its own correspondents, the newspaper joined the partnership between the British Guardian and the German weekly newspaper Der Freitag . According to the company, a “high quality and in-depth journalism” was sought. However, the external perception only partially coincided, for example:
« That is exactly what the“ Daily Week ”is one year after its launch: a regional newspaper with a website. Solid but ordinary. […] Biggest criticism after the first couple of weeks of “TagWeek”: the bravery. […] Biggest criticism after a year of “TagWeek”: When it comes to linking print and online, it falls short of its own claims. »
history
prehistory
The newspaper project was a reaction to the events at the Basler Zeitung from February 2010, when the “ Basler Zeitung Medien ” publishing and printing company, which had fallen into the red, was up for sale.
On February 8, 2010, the Ticino financier Tito Tettamanti acquired a 75% stake in the Basler Zeitung Medien for a rumored 70 million Swiss francs , while the Basel media lawyer Martin Wagner took over the remaining 25%. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung , which had also bid, was left behind.
On August 30, 2010, Markus Somm , who previously worked under Roger Köppel as deputy editor-in-chief for the politically right-wing weekly newspaper Die Weltwoche , was appointed the new editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung . On November 14, 2010, the NZZ published on Sunday that the “Basler Zeitung Medien” had given “Robinvest AG”, whose board of directors consists of SVP Vice President Christoph Blocher and his daughter, a comprehensive advisory mandate.
One day after Somm's appointment, Basler cultural worker Guy Krneta founded the website “RettetBasel!” To disseminate background information and assessments of the change in ownership of the Basler Zeitung . This internet platform also offered those visitors who did not agree with the new conditions at the Basler Zeitung the opportunity to enter their names on a list. According to "RettetBasel!" The appeal was signed by 18,740 people, of which 9,336 participants answered the question “I will subscribe to another daily newspaper if it is a real alternative for the Basel region”.
After the complaints about the “Basler Zeitungs-Handel” did not break off, there were increasing signs that the Tettamanti / Wagner team was considering reselling its majority of shares. On November 24, 2010, the Basel entrepreneur Moritz Suter, known throughout Switzerland, took over the «Basler Zeitung Medien» from the interim owners Tito Tettamanti and Martin Wagner, which was received with a certain relief by the critics of the «Basler Zeitung-Handels». But soon it was speculated in the press that Suter, who had to disclose his financial situation in 2008 in the “ Crossair criminal case”, was probably not able to pay the purchase price for the newspaper publisher himself. Suter then announced that he had only spent around one million francs on buying the holding company .
The discrepancy between the rumored 70 million francs, which allegedly flowed when the "Basler Zeitung Medien" was first sold, and the approximately one million francs that Suter claims to have spent, was so blatant that Suter was now accused of being in To have acted as a front man in this trade . The real donors are to be looked for elsewhere. All the more so because Tito Tettamanti announced at the same time that he was a financier and of course had made a profit with the trade.
Since it was not possible to establish transparency about the actual ownership of the Basler Zeitung in the following months either , the action group "Save Basel!" lodged a complaint with the Swiss Press Council to “put an end to the obfuscation of the ownership structure of the Basler Zeitung”. This complaint was approved on July 13, 2011.
On March 10, 2018, it was announced that the Basler Zeitung would be sold to the Tamedia group from Zurich. On October 29, 2018, Tamedia announced the completion of the transaction.
The TagesWoche business foundation
On April 14, 2011 the “Foundation for Media Diversity” was established. This foundation was the owner of “Neue Medien Basel AG”, which was founded on the same day and which in turn acted as the publisher of TagesWoche . The first few years were financed by the Levedo Foundation, run by Roche heir and patron Beatrice Oeri . The Swiss journalist and media consultant Ivo Bachmann , who also accompanied the project development, was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Neue Medien Basel AG” . The headquarters of the TagesWoche was the “Company Mitte” in the city center of Basel.
When it was founded, TagesWoche was run by Basel journalists Urs Buess and Remo Leupin as co-editors-in-chief. The editorial staff of 17 at that time consisted to a considerable extent of former journalists from the Basler Zeitung . Due to the history, the expectations of the new newspaper on Basler Boden were extremely high.
Change of editorial management in May 2013
On May 17, 2013 it was announced that Dani Winter would replace the previous co-editor-in-chief Urs Buess. Remo Leupin, previously co-editor-in-chief, became the new head of print. Dani Winter was previously a producer and online coordinator at TagesWoche . In connection with the leadership style to be expected, Dani Winter was quoted as saying that he was “not in the mood for chief” and that he trusts the “power of the collective” .
Urs Buess became the «journalistic director». Just under a year later, OnlineReports and the digital media magazine Medienwoche rated this new function definition as “transportation” or “cold storage”; Urs Buess was quoted in these media reports as saying: “My computer was gone and my chair in the executive office was occupied by my successor. From mid-June to October 2013, I was not given a new job in the editorial office. " The management denied these media reports, saying that Urs Buess had been given both a home office and an office space in the editorial office.
On April 9, 2014, OnlineReports made the official separation of TagesWoche and Urs Buess public. The TagesWoche itself justified the separation one day later with a “change in strategy aimed at intensifying digital activities and a stronger dialogical characterization of the TagesWoche” as well as with “irreconcilable differences with the editorial and management team” .
The change in leadership already resulted in an editorial crisis in autumn 2013, before the “circulation deal”:
« We don't know where our company is headed. [...] Apparently the participatory character of our project only exists in theory - or it is only reserved for a certain group. »
The editorial crisis arose against the background of spontaneous announcements on September 25, 2013 to confessed journalists, a lack of trust in the new editor-in-chief Dani Winter and the intransparent links between Tobias Faust (managing director of TagesWoche ), Georg Hasler (head of the Levedo Foundation) and the patron Beatrice Oeri, all of which are anthroposophically oriented.
Edition deal 2013/2014
On 5 February 2014, the local TV station covered Telebasel a deal between the day week and the Basel-Mulhouse airport and the airport Zurich to: 11,500 copies (50.8% of total circulation) the two airports on account were weekly delivered while the Airports, for their part, issued invoices in the same amount for hanging up on the airport premises. The majority of these copies did not go to the nearby Basel airport, but to the more distant Zurich airport, which makes little sense for the locally oriented advertising customers of TagesWoche . The purpose of the procedure was to increase the circulation: the apparently high circulation allowed higher advertising prices . As a result of the revelations, the Basel public prosecutor's office began investigations against TagesWoche .
According to the AG for Advertising Media Research (WEMF), the procedure chosen by TagesWoche was not illegal. Other Swiss newspapers also choose this method. However, the proportion of the total circulation of the TagesWoche was unusually high .
“It can be said, however, that the 'day week' exhausts the limits of the regulations, as around half of the certified circulation sold is in fact distributed free of charge. »
Regardless of whether there is actually illegal behavior, many see a contradiction in the circulation deal to the guidelines of the TagesWoche :
« The TagesWoche is honest and authentic. It relies on the greatest possible transparency. »
A similar discrepancy between facts and statements from TagesWoche emerged in connection with the relevance of the TagesWoche community on the Internet. While the CEO Tobias fist in the day week ! Community of "more than 10,000 people who are all relatively active" spoke, showed the day week yet -Statistics that 7200 (70%) of the 10,200 registered members of the community is not only made a statement (as of December 2013).
In February 2014, the Basel-Stadt public prosecutor's office initiated criminal proceedings for unfair competition and fraud. In November 2014, however, these proceedings were discontinued due to a lack of evidence and a lack of criminal charges.
According to both the left-wing WOZ and the bourgeois Basler Zeitung , the edition deal should actually have led to the immediate dismissal of Faust, but Faust was covered by Hasler. In fact, the termination took place in July 2015 (see section Change in leadership in 2015):
“ After the hustle and bustle of the 'TagesWoche' edition, the board of directors of Neue Medien Basel AG wanted to draw personnel conclusions. Tobias Faust would have been affected as managing director. Hasler, long-time friend of Faust, is said to have prevented an exemption. »
« According to critics, the managing director in charge Tobias Faust was only able to save himself [after the circulation deal] thanks to his good relationships. Faust is the childhood friend and neighbor of Oeri-Intimus Georg Hasler, who was seen as the man in the background at TagesWoche. With the reshuffle of the board of directors half a year ago, the wind has apparently turned. »
Layout change 2014
On March 28, 2014, TagesWoche changed the entire appearance of the print edition: paper format, layout, paper, typesetting. Readers and other media reacted with offense. The day week himself apologized for the pressure problems in the first issue in the new format.
Change of leadership
On June 30, 2015, the board of directors of the TagesWoche publisher Neue Medien Basel AG surprisingly released the managing director Tobias Faust and the editor Dani Winter. The reasons for the rush to release Faust and Winter instead of a regular termination of the employment relationship were not documented, especially since this rush was connected with the vacancy of the planned, new position of editorial / office at the time of the measure. The management was handed over to Remo Leupin, the co-editor-in-chief from the very beginning, for three months on an interim basis, but who also left TagesWoche at the end of September 2015 . From October to the end of 2015, Andreas Schwald was in charge.
On January 1, 2016 Christian Degen started as the new managing director and editor-in-chief at TagesWoche . Christian Degen left the company in February 2017.
In March 2017, Sibylle Schürch took over the management of TagesWoche . The doctor of law was responsible for all of the company's business activities. Since then, Renato Beck and Gabriel Brönnimann have been responsible for the content as editorial directors.
attitude
On November 5, 2018, the Foundation for Media Diversity announced that the TagesWoche would be discontinued and Neue Medien Basel AG would be liquidated, as the increase in income necessary to maintain it was not possible in the "difficult journalistic environment". The last issue was published on November 16, 2018. 18 people were affected by the hiring at TagesWoche , a total of 30 people at the AG. The foundation announced that it would support a new initiative with CHF 1 million annually so that a new media product could be launched for the Basel region as early as 2019.
