The independent community bank , based in Basel, is a Swiss investment and credit bank whose business activities are based on anthroposophical ideas. As a not-for-profit, cooperative bank, it aims to “promote charitable or other public initiatives by receiving and granting the lowest possible interest”.

Her activities mainly focus on the acceptance of savings and fixed-term deposits , the granting of mortgage loans and the investment of off-balance sheet fiduciary investments for her clients.

history

The idea of an anthroposophical banking institute for Switzerland was born in 1977 and in 1978 led to the foundation of the guarantee cooperative to promote independent initiatives in Dornach . In Germany, the GLS community bank was founded in 1974 for the same basic impulse . In 1980 a working group was created to set up a bank in Switzerland. In 1984, the Free Community Bank , based in Dornach , was finally founded as the first alternative bank in Switzerland after the relevant approval had been granted by the Federal Banking Commission . In 1999 the headquarters of the bank was relocated to Basel on the 2nd floor of the company mitte at Gerbergasse 30.

In April 2017, the bank moved to a house built for it at Meret Oppenheim-Strasse 10 in the Gundeldingen district in Basel. The building designed by the Swiss architect Walter Känel was implemented by the Basel architectural office Vischer Architekten. Even before construction began, the cooperative of the Free Community Bank formulated: "The new building will make the Free Community Bank more visible in the world as an outer shell." A hall for 170 people was set up on the ground floor, which is used for educational and cultural events. The events primarily deal with issues relating to the design of social relationships and the conscious use of money in theory and practice.

The impulse for the establishment of a "bank-like institute" was formulated by the founder of anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner , as early as 1919/20. In the essay "Guiding principles for a company to be founded" Steiner wrote: "It is necessary to found a bank-like institute which, in its financial measures, serves economic and intellectual companies. ... It will therefore be particularly important that the loans etc. not come about in the way that happens in ordinary banking, but from the factual points of view that come into consideration for an operation that is to be undertaken. The banker should therefore less the character of the borrower than that of the person involved in the matter Kaufmanns, who can assess with a healthy sense the scope of an operation to be financed and, with a sense of reality, make arrangements for carrying it out. " This basic idea has become decisive for the design of the independent community bank.
