The Danum-Valley-Conservation-Area (German: Danum-Tal-Naturschutzgebiet ) is a 438 square kilometer protected area in the Malaysian state of Sabah in the northeast of the island of Borneo . The reserve is part of a 10,000-square-kilometer forest management area, of the Yayasan Sabah Group owned Yayasan Sabah Forest Management Area , are the among other nature reserves and forest areas used for agriculture and forest rehabilitation areas. A neighboring protected area within the forest management area is the 588 square kilometer Maliau Basin Conservation Area .

The reserve is almost entirely covered by tropical lowland rainforests .

The reserve offers a home for numerous animal species that are threatened by the destruction of this habitat. Among the approximately 120 species of mammals, the rare orangutans deserve special mention. The area is also home to numerous other, rare large animals such as Asian elephants , Bantengs , sun bears , clouded leopards , bearded pigs and various species of deer. It is also one of the last refuge areas for the rare Sumatran rhinoceros . Over 340 species of birds can be found in the reserve. In the Danum Valley, the world record holder is also among the rainforest trees. A yellow meranti tree there reaches a height of 100.8 meters.
