After the war he worked as a trainer for the Royal Horse Guards stationed in Menden in the Sauerland . Here he met his future wife Maria. Together with his wife, he opened the Greif training stable in Hamburg. The couple won the German championship in dressage (Walter Günther on adjutant ) and jumping (Maria Günter on Zambezi ) on the same day, so far as the only married couple .

Until his sudden death in 1974 as a result of a serious heart disease with an operation, Günther was the national trainer for the German dressage riders.
