Maria Günther

Maria Günther (born January 30, 1925 in Zwickau as Maria Bühling ) is a trainer of horses, riders and riding instructors. In 1963 she became German jumping champion .

Life

Maria Günter rode since she was seven. In 1943, after graduating from high school, she was assigned to military service . She went to Pomerania as a rider . After the end of the war she worked for the Royal Horse Guards stationed in Menden in the Sauerland as a groom, rider and interpreter. Here she met her future husband Walter Günther , known as "Bubi Günther". As early as 1947 she was allowed to ride in the Aachen Soers , at that time still under the British flag. Together with her husband, she opened the Greif training stable in Hamburg. The couple won the German championship in dressage (Walter Günther on adjutant ) and jumping (Maria Günter on Zambezi ) on the same day, so far as the only married couple .

Towards the end of her active sports career, she shifted her focus to dressage riding . In 1974/1975, after the death of her husband, she rode MacBeth, who had been trained by him, at Grand Prix level . In 1975 she ended her equestrian career and has been a tournament judge ever since.
