Western European League 2018/2019 (show jumping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western European League of the Show Jumping World Cup 2018/2019 (Longines FEI Jumping World Cup from 2018 to 2019, Western European League) was the 41st season of the Western and Central European League of the Show Jumping World Cup . The World Cup is the most important tournament series in the indoor season in the Western European League.

Course of the tournament series

The biggest change for the calendar of the Western European League was the removal of the CSI Zurich from the annual tournament sports calendar . In return, two other tournaments were included in the Western European League in January: Jumping Amsterdam, which mostly took place at the same time as the CSI Zurich, got its world cup status in show jumping back after eleven years. In the ninth year of its existence, the CSI Basel received World Cup status, so that Switzerland continued to have a World Cup tournament.

Due to the fact that Gothenburg did not host a normal World Cup tournament, but was the location of the World Cup final in 2019, the number of World Cup tournaments in the Western European League remained unchanged at 13. In mid-October 2018, the World Cup began, the last stage was on the program at the beginning of February 2019.

There was no change to the title sponsor, the Swiss watch manufacturer Longines remained the name sponsor of the tournament series. All tournaments in the league were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping. They were marked with the suffix -W (i.e. CSI 5 * -W) to identify them as World Cup tournaments. The best 18 riders in the Western European League and additional participants ("extra competitors") qualified for the 2019 World Cup finals .

On Sunday afternoon, the World Cup special test was on the program at most World Cup tournaments. Three tournaments differed from this: In Bordeaux and Madrid, the World Cup competitions were already held on Saturday evening, in Mechelen it takes place on the afternoon of December 30th every year, regardless of the day of the week.

The World Cup competitions were held as a jumping competition with a single jump-off , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters or up to 1.65 meters. Prize money of at least 100,000 per special stage was to be distributed.

media

The tests of the Western European League were broadcast by the FEI for a fee via its Internet portal FEI TV. In the country where the respective World Cup competitions were held, these were mostly broadcast live on television, and the other competitions in the Western European League were also shown live or recorded in individual European countries. The pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport 1 broadcast the exams in a 60-minute summary, which was mostly shown on the Tuesday or Wednesday of the week following the tournament.

The exams

Oslo

The start of the Western European League was the Oslo Horse Show. As part of this riding tournament, the first special test took place from October 10th to 14th, 2018 in the Telenor Arena in Oslo .

Twelve starter pairs made it into the jump-off. The first rider in the jump-off course, which was built by the Italian Elio Travagliati, was Anna-Julia Kontio. With the mare Ornellaia , taken over by John Whitaker in the summer , the ride did not go as planned, however, with 12 penalty points she came in twelfth in the end. The first zero-error round in the jump-off came from the second starter, Michael Cristofoletti (46.70 seconds with Belony ). Douglas Lindelöw started just as early in the jump-off, with Zacramento he made no mistakes and needed less than 45 seconds. He set a benchmark that no other rider was able to beat. The last rider in the jump-off, Kevin Staut, managed to jump to second place with Silver Deux de Virton , but he too was almost a second slower than Lindelöw. For Staut, this was the repetition of the previous year's result. Edwina Tops-Alexander, in third place, also repeated her placement from last year.

Helsinki

The second stage of the Western European League also took the riders to Scandinavia: The Helsingin Jäähalli in Helsinki was the venue for the World Cup there. The Helsinki International Horse Show took place from October 17-21, 2018.

In the jump-off of the World Cup jumping on October 21, ten of the 38 participating pairs were still eligible to start. The jump-off course was not a big challenge for the riders, eight of the ten also made no mistakes here. So fast riding was a particular focus. It was extremely close: the difference between victory and eighth place was just 1.40 seconds. The victory went to Gudrun Patteet and the 12-year-old gelding Pebbles Z . For the Belgians this was the first victory in a competition in the Western European League.

Verona

For the second year in a row, Jumping Verona no longer took place in November, but at the end of October. The Italian Show Jumping World Cup was held from October 25th to 28th, 2018 as part of the Fieracavalli in Verona .

14 riders and their horses took part in the jump-off of the World Cup test on the last day of the tournament. Ludger Beerbaum was the third rider in the jump-off with Casello, who managed the first zero-fault lap (time: 40.82 seconds). The riders who started immediately after him, Petronella Andersson and Luca Marziani, each took the lead with an even faster time without mistakes. Further changes in leadership followed in the course of the jump-off. But the victory went to the last couple: Daniel Deußer and the 11-year-old gelding Calisto Blue were the only riders to cross the finish line in under 37 seconds.

Lyon

On the first weekend in November, from October 30 to November 4, 2018, the Western European League made a stop at the Rhône: Lyon's Eurexpo exhibition center was the venue for the Equitá Lyon tournament . The world cup competition was on the program on November 4th from 2:00 p.m.

In the jump-off, 10 riders were allowed to start, four of them from France. The first of seven rides without any mistakes in the jump-off came from the second starter, Guillaume Foutrier. Lorenzo De Luca clearly undercut his rather slow time of 41.87 seconds and took the lead with the Belgian gelding Ensor de Litrange LXII . This lead lasted until shortly before the end of the jump-off: Martin Fuchs and Clooney , who were third in Verona a week earlier, undercut De Lucas time. Steve Guerdat was the last rider in the jump-off. With Bianca he was the third rider who needed less than 38 seconds for the course without making any mistakes. He finished the test in third place. The best Frenchman was Kevin Staut in fifth.

Stuttgart

While the North American World Cup made a stop in Las Vegas at the same time, the European riders focused on the Stuttgart German Masters from November 14th to 18th, 2018 : The fifth World Cup of the Western European League was held in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart .

Of the 40 participants who competed in the Grand Prix of Stuttgart on the Sunday of the tournament from 3:00 p.m., ten made it into the jump-off with a faultless ride. Three pairs of starters missed the play-off due to a single time penalty, including Lorenzo De Luca and Ensor de Litrange LXII , the second placed from Lyon.

In the jump-off, Max Kühner was the fourth starter to manage the first zero-error lap. At his last tournament with a final (the eight-year-old gelding switched from Jan Tops to Cian O'Connor via the stable), Kühner deliberately took his time and needed more than ten seconds more for the jump-off course than the previously started Maurice Tebbel . Tebbel finished the test in fourth place, because only two other riders managed to overcome Christa Jung's course without penalty points. Christian Ahlmann as the penultimate starter was again slower than Kühner with the dark chestnut Tokyo . As the last rider, Pieter Devos was the only one who managed to stay clear in a time of less than 50 seconds and thus secured victory.

Madrid

On the weekend after Stuttgart, the Western European League continued in the Spanish capital: The Madrid Horse Week was held from November 23rd to 25th, 2018. The venue for the tournament was the Feria de Madrid .

The World Cup competition no longer took place on Saturday evening as in the previous year, but began on Sunday at 1 p.m. After 18 participants had qualified for the jump-off in Madrid last year, in 2018 it was exactly the target quarter of participants (10 out of 40). The ride of the 25-year-old Swede Irma Karlsson marked the start of the jump-off. With a fast time of 48.28 seconds and no mistakes, she managed to build up pressure on the riders who followed. While both Wilm Vermeir and Eric van der Vleuten each received eight penalty points, Daniel Deußer was able to top Karlsson's performance. In less than 47 seconds he crossed the finish line with the 10-year-old Tobago Z. This should be enough for rank one by the end of the exam. Steve Guerdat once again managed to jump to one of the top positions, and as the penultimate starter he made it to second place with Ulysse des Forets .

A Coruña

At the beginning of December, from December 7th to 9th, 2018, the second Spanish World Cup stage in a row was on the program in the Galician city of A Coruña . The world cup tournament was held in the large (80 × 40 meters), wood-stamped riding hall of the Centro Hípico Casas Novas.

Once again, the lavishly endowed World Cup competition (330,000 euros in prize money) took place in competition with the three times as lavishly endowed Geneva Grand Prix . In A Coruña, too, the course designer managed to have exactly a quarter of the starting field in the jump-off with ten clear laps in the normal round. The first starter in the jump-off was Christian Kukuk, who with Colestus managed the first (but also the slowest) of six faultless rides. Irma Karlsson managed to jump into the jump-off again with Ida van de Bisschop . But in A Coruña she lost her luck here, twelve penalty points were only enough for tenth place in the end. Several changes in leadership followed, after Kukuk Olivier Robert and Jos Verlooy were in the lead until Edwina Tops-Alexander took first place as seventh starter. With the stallion Vinchester , ridden by young French rider Arthur Le Vot until summer 2018 , she crossed the finish line in 42.26 seconds. With this fastest time of all riders in the jump-off, Tops-Alexander remained undefeated and thus won this World Cup competition.

London

On the days before Christmas, the World Cup in London was part of the Western European League . The Olympia London International Horse Show was held from December 17th to 23rd, 2018. Unlike in most years, the tournament in the Olympia Grand Hall did not end on the Monday before Christmas, but on Sunday. With that, the World Cup jumping was moved one day forward and took place on Saturday afternoon (December 22nd).

After there was an extremely small starting field in the jump-off in 2017, the jump-off at the London World Cup jumping in 2018 was oversized: 18 of the 37 participants made it into the jump-off. The first error-free ride in the jump-off came from the fifth participant, Malin Baryard-Johnsson. William Whitaker was more than two seconds faster and took the lead without mistakes in a time of 37.02 seconds. Michael Whitaker with the gray stallion Valmy de la Lande (38.14 seconds) and Karel Cox (37.21 seconds) were just a little slower. It turned out to be extremely difficult to undercut William Whitaker's time: Daniel Deußer, Henrik von Eckermann and Marcus Ehning (of whom the fastest time of the jump-off came with 36.03 seconds) made an obstacle error while trying to undercut them. The winning couple from A Coruña, Edwina Tops-Alexander and Vinchester , placed themselves flawlessly behind Michael Whitaker. As the last starter, Laura Kraut attacked the lead's time, with her gray mare ceremony she was fast, but it was only enough for third place.

The victory went to William Whitaker and Utamaro d'Ecaussines . For Whitaker it was the last test with the 14-year-old stallion. At the turn of the year he left the stable of Utamaro d'Ecaussines owner Ludwig Criel and started a new job in Florida.

Mechelen

At the end of 2018 there was another World Cup tournament: As every year, the indoor riding tournament Jumping Mechelen - Vlaanderens Kerstjumping took place in Mechelen from December 26th to 30th . The venue was the Nekkerhal in the east of the Belgian city.

With only four riders who had made it into the jump-off, a quick decision in the Mechelen World Cup became apparent. The course designer was the Belgian Eddy Geysemans. Kevin Staut did a good job with the Holstein gelding Cannary , which he only took over at the beginning of the World Cup season. He crossed the finish line in under 41 seconds without any mistakes. Harrie Smolders was a little slower with his experienced stallion Don Z. Ludger Beerbaum ran past an obstacle with Casello , the time penalty points resulting from the new riding increased his result to 14 penalty points. For Christian Ahlmann as the last rider, things went much better in the jump-off course, he was able to beat Staut's time without mistakes. With this he secured victory with the gray stallion Clintrexo Z, who was bred just under 30 kilometers from Mechelen .

Basel

As the new Swiss show jumping world cup, the CSI Basel has been included in the Western European League. The tournament takes place at the beginning of January (2019 from January 10th to 13th), a good half a month earlier than the previous, no longer held World Cup stage in Zurich .

The World Cup jumping was on the program on January 13th from 2:15 pm, the course designer was Frank Rothenberger. The tight allowed time of 68 seconds in normal circulation ensured that many riders received time penalties (four alone with only one time penalty point) and that the jump-off remained small. Only three riders managed a faultless ride with their horses.

Marc Houtzager had to present in this three-rider jump-off, with his 12-year-old gelding Calimero he stayed clear in under 39 seconds. Pieter Devos tried to master the course faster with his chestnut gelding Apart . This succeeded, but an obstacle error prevented the change in leadership. Last year's winners, Martin Fuchs and Clooney , started as the last couple . They crossed the finish line without a mistake, a time more than a second faster than Houtzager's gave them another victory in this stage.

Leipzig

One week after Basel, from January 17 to 20, 2019, the next stage of the Western European League was held. The second world cup show jumping competition in Germany, the partner horse , took place at the Leipzig exhibition center . The World Cup competition in Leipzig was the grand prize held on the last day of the tournament. In the normal round of the 160,000 euro exam, seven participants remained free of penalty points.

Only the third rider managed a clear round in the jump-off, François Mathy Jr crossed the finish line in 41.49 seconds with the 11-year-old Uno de la Roque . Daniel Deußer was the first jump-off participant to fall below the mark of 40 seconds, but his ride was not without obstacle errors. Lorenzo de Luca and Marcus Ehning also failed to take the lead. The last starter was Christian Ahlmann, who competed in the Leipzig Grand Prix with Caribis Z in 2019 . It took him over 40 seconds to complete the course, but he was faster than Mathy and also made no mistakes. In doing so, he defended his last year's victory in this test, which was Ahlmann's fourth victory in the Leipzig Grand Prix in the last ten years.

Amsterdam

The end of the world cup tournament in Zurich enabled the Jumping Amsterdam tournament to return to the show jumping world cup. Amsterdam lost its World Cup status in 2009 to the CSI Zurich, which usually took place at the same time. The indoor equestrian tournament in Amsterdam was held from January 24th to 27th, 2019. The riders competed for the World Cup on the last day of the tournament from 3:15 p.m. In Amsterdam, too, there were a large number of rides with time penalties. Twelve riders finished the course without any obstacle errors, but only eight of them stayed within the allowed time and thus made it into the jump-off.

The international little-known Portuguese Rodrigo Giesteira Almeida started the jump-off. Since Luciana Diniz did not take part in the World Cup this indoor season, Giesteira Almeida had the opportunity to contest several World Cup stages. In Amsterdam he made no mistakes in 35.31 seconds, which should mean sixth place at the end of the stage. In the jump-off, only Malin Baryard-Johnsson made an obstacle error, so that there were several changes in the lead. After Giesteira Almeida, Niels Bruynseels, Kevin Staut, Daniel Deußer and Pius Schwizer took the lead. Henrik von Eckermann was the last rider in the jump-off with his fast Westphalian mare Mary Lou , and he too was able to undercut the previous best performance again. A time of only 33.01 seconds secured him the win of this test.

Bordeaux

At the end of the season, the riders competed in the Parc de Expositions in Bordeaux . The second World Cup tournament in France, Jumping International de Bordeaux , took place from February 7th to 10th, 2019.

The last World Cup stage was held on the evening of the tournament Saturday (February 9th) from 8:30 p.m. The time allowed did not play a decisive role in the World Cup in Bordeaux, not a single participant received time errors in the course of the normal circuit designed by Jean-Francois Morand. Six riders were left with no mistakes. Celine Schoonbroodt-de Azevedo, who made an obstacle error with her mare Cheppetta , started the jump-off for these six . It should be the only mistake in these jump-offs. The first zero-error lap came from François Mathy Jr , who crossed the finish line in 50.36 seconds with Uno de la Roque . While Marie Valdar Longem, who is more of an outsider, was a good three seconds slower, Gregory Wathelet took the lead as the fourth starter. As the third Belgian rider in this six-way jump-off, he competed with the stallion Iron Man van de Padenborre and crossed the finish line in under 48 seconds.

Eduardo Álvarez Aznar and his successful horse Rokfeller de Pleville joined Wathelet. As the final rider, Daniel Deußer managed to cope with the turns of the jump-off course even more fluently with his chestnut stallion Tobago Z and crossed the finish line in 46.37 seconds. With this, Deußer, who was already the leader of the Western European League from Bordeaux, secured his third victory of this World Cup season.

Overall rating

On the basis of the overall ranking, after all the special tests were completed, it was determined which 18 riders from the states in the Western European League qualified for the final. In addition, other riders from other countries could qualify for the World Cup finals via the Western European League, provided they live in the Central / Western European League.

The riders were also able to collect points in the North American World Cup (see “others” in the table below). Rating points from other World Cup leagues in the world, however, were not transferred to the Western European League. The regulations can be found in the main article on the Show Jumping World Cup .

With three wins and almost 100 rating points, Daniel Deußer dominated the 2018/2019 Western European League season. Christian Ahlmann followed in second place. Ludger Beerbaum came in 19th. Due to the additional rider regulation (Edwina Tops-Alexander as a rider from a non-Western European league does not count for the 18 starting places in the league), he narrowly managed to qualify for the final. Two other German riders in 20th and 21st place narrowly missed the direct qualification for the World Cup final. For Switzerland, Steve Guerdat and Martin Fuchs entered the World Cup final with over 60 points each. Martin Fuchs only took part in four World Cup competitions, but won two of them. For the fourth time in his career, including the third time for Austria, Max Kühner also qualified for the final.
