Filippo Emanuele Bottino (born December 9, 1888 in Genoa , † October 18, 1969 in Sestri Ponente , Genoa) was an Italian weightlifter and Olympic champion.

Filippo Bottino, a tobacco factory worker, began lifting weights at the age of 17; Genoa was one of the centers for this sport in Italy. His club was the Società Ginnastica Sampierdarenese , which later became the Sampdoria Genoa football club . In 1913 Bottino became Italian champion for the first time.

In 1920 and 1924 Bottino competed in the Olympic Games. In 1920 in Antwerp he won the gold medal with a total performance of 265 kilograms in a three-way battle, which also meant an Olympic record . The triad at that time included lifting with the left, the right and both arms. The competition took place outdoors in the Olympic Stadium in Antwerp . In 1924 in Paris , Bottino lifted a total of 495 kilograms, with this competition consisting of five instead of three lifts. In 1922 Bottino improved the world record in two-armed pushing , making him the first Italian to set a world record in weightlifting. He was also Italian champion eleven times.

Bottino also caused a sensation in Antwerp for other reasons: he was insulted by master fencer Aldo Nadi and challenged him to a duel. Nadi came up with a riding whip and Bottino with a wooden club. Within a short time, however, Bottino had to drop his weapon, as Nadi had hit his hand with the whip.

Filippo Bottino has been honored several times, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the gold medal of the CONI ( Medaglia al Valore Atletico ), and he was an honorary member of the Italian weightlifting association FIPE . In 1965 it was said of him that Bottino was "a hard-working and honest man who embodies the true spirit of sport". In Sestri Ponente, his home district in Genoa, a street was named after him. The tobacco factory where Bottino had worked was on this street. Today the former Manifattura Tabacchi , which belonged to the Italian state due to the former tobacco monopoly, houses apartments, a parking garage, a community center, libraries and restaurants.
