Juri Konstantinowitsch Saizew ( Russian Юрий Константинович Зайцев , scientific transliteration Jurij Konstantinovič Zajcev ; born January 17, 1951 in Pobedino , Sakhalin Oblast ) is a former Soviet weightlifter . He was Olympic champion in 1976 and world champion in 1978 in the class up to 110 kg.

Career

Saizew grew up in Pobedino in Sakhalin Oblast . When he was ten years old, his parents moved to Karaganda , Kazakhstan . He attended high school in Karaganda, where he came into intensive contact with sport for the first time. He started lifting weights at the age of 14. His first coach was Vladimir Netschipurenko, who coached him for many years. In the next few years he won several championships in the Karaganda and Omsk regions as a junior. In 1971 he was drafted into the Red Army.

In 1972 he achieved in the Olympic three-way fight, which consisted of two-armed pushing, tearing and pushing, with 540 kg a performance that made him catch up with the top Soviet weightlifters in the 2nd heavyweight division. From 1973 there was only one duel because pressing was canceled. In 1974 he was accepted into the Soviet national weightlifting team. In 1976 he moved with his coach to Dnepropetrovsk because of the better training conditions .

In 1973 he took 3rd place in the Soviet Junior Championship (U-23) in the 2nd heavyweight division with 345 kg. In 1974 he was then in the same weight class Soviet junior champion (U-23) with 362.5 kg. In the same year he was used for the first time in an international championship, the World Cup in Manila . He came there in the 2nd heavyweight in a duel on 367.5 kg and with this performance took 3rd place behind his compatriot Valeri Ustyuschin (390 kg) and Jürgen Ciezki from the GDR (377.5 kg).

In the Soviet senior championship in 1975 he reached 387.5 kg (165-222.5), 2nd place in the 2nd heavyweight division behind Vasily Mosheikov . He came this year to no more missions in the national team, but took 1st place in a large Soviet tournament in Zaporozhye , where he achieved 390 kg (167.5-222.5). At another national tournament in Moscow in 1975 he achieved two new world records in the 2nd heavyweight division with 235 kg in the push and 405 kg in a duel.

In 1976, Saizew first won the Soviet championship in the 2nd heavyweight division with 395 kg (172.5–222.5) in a duel thanks to the lower body weight in front of Valery Falew, who, like him, scored 395 kg and ex-world champion Pavel Pervuschin , who on 387, 5 kg came. This victory gave him starting positions at the European Championships in 1976 in Berlin (East) and at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . In Berlin he reached 400 kg (172.5-227.5) in a duel, but had to defeat the only 20-year-old Bulgarian "miracle lifter" Valentin Christow , who won with 415 kg (185-230). In Montreal, Valentin Christow first won the gold medal with 400 kg (175-225) in front of Saizew, who achieved 385 kg (165-220). Shortly after the competition, however, Christow was found doping. He was disqualified and Saizew was declared Olympic champion .

In 1977 the World and European Championships took place in Stuttgart . aizew was there again in the 2nd heavyweight division. He reached 395 kg (170-225) in a duel in Stuttgart and had to admit defeat to Valentin Christow, 405 kg, who was allowed to start a short doping ban in Stuttgart again. Third place went to his old rival Jürgen Ciezki from the GDR in Stuttgart, who reached 390 kg.

At the Soviet championship in 1978 he had to admit defeat with 395 kg (170-225) Vasily Kuznichenko, who also achieved 395 kg, but was slightly lighter than Saizew. At the international championships of 1978, however, Saizew was used. At the European Championships in Havířov he achieved 402.5 kg (177.5–225) in the 2nd heavyweight division and thus clearly won ahead of Jürgen Ciezki, who came to 380 kg. The same result was achieved at this year's World Championships in Gettysburg . He achieved in the duel again 402.5 kg (172.5-230) and thus won again before Jürgen Ciezki, who reach 385 kg.

In 1979, Saizew took 3rd place in the Soviet championship in the 2nd heavyweight division behind the meteoric forward Belarusian Leonid Taranenko (410 kg) and the young Sergei Arakelow (407.5 kg) with 395 kg. But he was still used at the European Championships in Varna and won there with 400 kg (172.5-227.5) the European title ahead of Drandarow, Bulgaria and Peter Käks from the GDR. At the world championship in 1979 Taranenko and Arakelow were used in the 2nd heavyweight division.

In 1980 the Soviet participants in the Olympic Games in Moscow were determined at a competition in Podolsk . Saizew was in excellent shape and achieved the new personal best of 410 kg (172.5-237.5) in this competition. With this performance he was only 2nd winner behind Leonid Taranenko, who achieved 415 kg. For this reason Leonid Tarananko was preferred to him in Moscow. It was also not used at the 1980 European Championships in Belgrade .

Saizew then ended his career as a weightlifter. Nothing is known about his further life.
