Géza Tóth

Géza Tóth [ ˈɡeːzɒ ˈtoːt ] (born January 25, 1932 in Sorokpolány , † October 4, 2011 in Szombathely ) was a Hungarian weightlifter .

Career

Géza Tóth started lifting weights in 1952, when he was 20 years old, after playing soccer as a boy and a teenager. He practiced weightlifting in the association VSE Haladás Szombathely . His coach was Sándor Gere. In the mid-1950s, Tóth had reached the top Hungarian league and through hard training soon made contact with the world's best. In 1960 he finished fourth at the Olympic Games in Rome with 417.5 kg in the light heavyweight division and barely missed a medal. He then won an Olympic medal in Tokyo in 1964 . There he won the silver medal, again in the light heavyweight division (up to 82.5 kg body weight). His greatest sporting success was winning the world championship title in 1966 in Berlin in the middle heavyweight division (up to 90 kg body weight).

Géza Tóth, who was active until 1970, was a gymnastics and sports teacher.
