Phil Grippaldi

Philip Salvatore "Phil" Grippaldi (born September 27, 1946 in Newark, New Jersey ) is a retired American weightlifter.

Career

Phil Grippaldi comes from Belleville in New Jersey / USA . As a teenager, he initially did bodybuilding , but soon switched to weightlifting . He started doing it at Keasbey Eagles AC and later moved to the Bellville Barbell Club. His first trainer was Butch Toth. When he became a member of the US national weightlifting team, he was looked after by former top Hungarian weightlifter who emigrated to the US, Mihály Huszka . In 1966 he set his first junior world record in pressing and in the same year finished 2nd in the middle heavyweight division at the US championships. He developed steadily and from 1967 played a good role in many international championships. His greatest sporting success was winning the middle heavyweight runner-up in 1970. He took part in three Olympic Games and in 1972 just barely missed a medal in fourth. At the 1976 Olympic Games , he was disqualified for doping .
