Hans Bettembourg
Hans Bettembourg , actually Hansjörg Bettenburg , (born March 28, 1944 in Neuruppin , Province of Brandenburg , German Reich ) is a former Swedish weightlifter . He won a bronze medal in the middle heavyweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich .
Career
Hans Bettembourg, who was born as Hansjörg Bettenburg, emigrated with his family from Germany to Sweden after the Second World War . He started lifting weights as a teenager at the Falu AK Falun Sports Club .
In 1968 he first appeared in the list of winners of the Swedish championships when he won the title in the light heavyweight division with 417.5 kg in the Olympic three-way battle. In 1969 he rose to 432.5 kg at the Baltic Cup in Zinnowitz in the light heavyweight division and in the same year also started at the World and European Championships in Warsaw , where he was in the light heavyweight division with 457.5 kg (162.5-132.5 kg -162.5) took 8th place in the World Cup and 6th place in the European Championship. From his performance it can be seen that Bettembourg was a specialist in pressing, because with the 162.5 kg he achieved in this discipline, he was behind the American Russell Knipp , who achieved the same performance but was a little lighter than him , Vice- World Champion and European Champion at the same time .
In 1970 Hans Bettembourg reached the 4th place at the European Championships in Szombathely in the light heavyweight division with 462.5 kg (162.5-130-170) and barely missed a medal. At the world championship of the same year in Columbus / USA he remained unplaced because he had 3 failed attempts in pressing.
In 1971 he reached at the European Championships in Sofia in the middle heavyweight in the Olympic three-way fight 510 kg (190-140-180) and came behind David Rigert from the USSR , 537.5 kg, Bo Johansson from Sweden , 537.5 kg u. Atanas Schopow from Bulgaria took 4th place. At the 1971 World Cup in Lima , he managed 500 kg (180-137.5-182.5). This achievement was enough for 5th place.
At the European Championships in 1972 in Constanța , Hans Bettembourg remained unplaced because he again had 3 failed attempts to press. At the 1972 Olympics in Munich , he scored but then the greatest success in his career, because he won there with 512.5 kg (182,5-145-185) in the Olympic triathlon, the bronze medal , and he benefited from the fact that the great Favorite David Rigert had three failed attempts in the snatch.
Despite the fact that from January 1, 1973 the international weightlifting federation canceled pushing and the Olympic three-way fight became a duel, Hans Bettembourg continued his international career, although this decision of course deprived him of all chances at the other international championships. He remained unplaced again at the European Championships in Madrid in 1973 because he failed to make three times his starting weight in the snatch. At the European Championships in 1974 in Verona he achieved in the middle heavyweight 345 kg (150-195), which reached 6th place. At the 1974 World Cup in Manila , he made three failed attempts again and remained unplaced without a duel result. Then he ended his weightlifting career.
As a specialist in printing, Hans Bettemburg set a total of ten world records in this discipline over the course of his career. The first on October 12, 1969 in Malung in the light heavyweight with 170.5 kg and the last on February 20, 1972 in Ojebyn in the medium heavyweight with 195.5 kg.
