Peter Petzold
Peter Petzold (born June 1, 1949 in Wilsdruff ) is a former German weightlifter . He won several medals at world and European championships.
Career
Peter Petzold began lifting weights as a teenager in Meißen . He started for the SC unit Dresden / Meißen . His trainer was Karl Breuer. In 1968 he was junior champion of the GDR in the light heavyweight with 355 kg (102.5-112.5-140) in the Olympic three-way fight. He won this title in 1969, but in the middle heavyweight with an increase to 395 kg in the Olympic three-way fight.
At 1.72 meters tall, Peter Petzold was a very strong athlete. This was also shown by the fact that he performed very well in the press, which was part of the Olympic three-way battle until the end of 1972 and was abolished from 1973. In this respect, the abolition of this discipline was a disadvantage for him.
In 1971 he won a light heavyweight tournament of the ASK Vorwärts Leipzig with 450 kg (145-132.5-172.5) and in 1972 he won the DGV Cup tournament in medium heavyweight with 487.5 kg (167.5-145-175) in the Olympic three-way battle in front of Peter Käks from ASK Vorwärts Leipzig , who scored 475 kg (150-140-185). From 1972 Peter Petzold only started in the middle heavyweight division, the weight class that at that time had its weight limit of 90 kg body weight. He has not yet made the leap to the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich .
In 1973 he took second place at the GDR championship with 340 kg in a duel behind Bernhard Radtke from SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , 342.5 kg. In the same year he was first used at the European Championships in Madrid , where he finished 4th with 345 kg behind David Rigert from the USSR , 367.5 kg, Andon Nikolow , Bulgaria , 352.5 kg and Atanas Schopow , Bulgaria, 350 kg. Took place. At the World Championships held in Havana in autumn 1983 , Peter Petzold increased to 357.5 kg (160-197.5 kg) and won a bronze medal in snatch, push and triathlon .
1974 Peter Petzold was the first time GDR master with 362.5 kg (160-202.5) in a duel. He also won this title in 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979.
He remained successful on the international weightlifting stage for the next few years. In 1974 he finished 4th at the European Championships in Verona with 355 kg, but won the bronze medal in a duel with the same result at the World Championships of the same year in Manila . In front of him there were only the two Soviets David Rigert and Sergei Poltorazki , who came to 387.5 kg and 367.5 kg respectively. In 1975 the world championship, the zgl. was considered the European Championship, held in Moscow . Peter Petzold took 3rd place in a duel with 362.5 kg (160-202.5 kg) and also won the WM + EM bronze medal in the push with 202.5 kg. David Riegert, 377.5 kg and Sergei Poltorazki, 372.5 kg, also placed in front of him in this championship.
At the 1976 European Championships in Berlin (East), Peter Petzold reached 350 kg (157.5-192.5) for the bronze medal in a duel behind David Rigert , 397.5 kg (177.5-220) and Adam Saidulajew , USSR To gain 360 kg (160-200). Olympic champion was David Rigert with 382.5 kg (170-212.5) in front of the American Lee James , 362.5 kg (165-197.5). James won the silver medal with an achievement that even a Peter Petzold in good shape could have achieved.
In 1977 Peter Petzold competed at the World and European Championships in Stuttgart . There he achieved 342.5 kg (152.5-190) and came in 6th place (EM valuation 5th place). After that he was not used in any international championship.
