Jaakko Kailajärvi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaakko Rafael Kailajärvi (born July 1, 1941 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish weightlifter . He won several medals at international championships and in 1962 set two world records in snatch.

Career

Jaakko Kailajärvi began lifting weights at the age of ten, but also worked as a skier, athlete and soccer player as a teenager. At the age of 16, however, he concentrated entirely on lifting weights. He became a member of the Tampereen Kisaveikkot sports club , later of Tampereen Pyrintö . His two older brothers Jorma and Jouni were also weightlifters, of which Jouni, like himself, achieved international stature.

At the age of 18, Jaakko Kailajärvi achieved in 1959 as a middleweight 345 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. A year later, in 1960, he was the first Finnish champion in the seniors, scoring 360 kg (100-117.5-142.5) in the middleweight division. He referred his 5 years older brother Jorma to 2nd place with 355 kg.

On January 1, 1962, the International Weightlifting Federation first set world records for juniors. Three performances by Jaakko Kailajärvi were recognized as world records: 132.5 kg in snatch, 162.5 kg in push and 400 kg in the Olympic three-way fight.

In 1962 he finished in the world and European championships in Budapest in light heavyweight with 440 kg (122.5-145-172.5 kg) in the world championship ranking 4th and in the European championship ranking 3rd place. On this occasion, he achieved a new world record among seniors in the snatch with 146.5 kg. This was his second world record, the first he had set on January 7, 1962 in Erajarvi with 143.5 kg.

In the years 1962 to 1964 Jaakko Kailajärvi was Finnish light heavyweight champion and referred each Kaarlo Kangasniemi , the later Olympic champion , to the 2nd place.

In 1964 he started at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the light heavyweight division, but came there in the light heavyweight division with 435 kg (125-140-170) only on the 9th place. He achieved a better ranking at the World Championships in Tehran in 1965 , where he finished 7th in the middle heavyweight division with 440 kg. In 1966 and 1967 he was injured frequently and could barely start. In 1968 he was in good shape again and achieved an excellent 5th place in the middle heavyweight division both at the European Championships in Leningrad and at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . His performances were 472.5 kg and 485 kg in the Olympic three-way fight.

In 1971 Jaakko Kailajärvi achieved his best performance at the Baltic Cup in Lübeck with 495 kg (152.5-152.5-190) in the Olympic three-way fight, which he repeated at the 1972 European Championships in Constanța . There he came in 5th place in the middle heavyweight division. In 1972 he took part in the Olympic Games for the third time in Munich and reached 8th place with 487.5 kg in the middle heavyweight division.

After pushing was abolished by the international weightlifting federation on January 1, 1973, as an athlete who had his strengths in snatching and pushing, he once again came in 5th at the European Championships in Madrid in 1973 and in Verona in 1974. At the 1974 World Championships in Manila he reached an excellent 4th place with 355 kg (160-195) in a duel, whereby he won the bronze medal in the duel only because of the slightly higher body weight compared to Peter Petzold from the GDR , who, like him, was 355 kg picked up, missed. In 1976 he took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time. But had to retire in Montreal after the tear due to injury.

Jaakko Kailajärvi was always one of the best athletes at the World and European Championships in snatch from 1962 to 1968. Titles in these individual disciplines have only been awarded since 1969. From this point on he won a silver medal in snatch at the 1972 World Cup and in 1972 European Championships and a bronze medal in snatching in 1974.

After his playing days, Kailajärvi worked for a number of years as head coach in the Finnish Weightlifting Association and also held other board positions for a number of years. He was also a fitness and strength trainer for many years at the Tappara ice hockey club .
