Sergei Poltorazki ( Russian Сергей Полторацкий ; born October 28, 1947 in the Latvian SSR ) is a former Soviet weightlifter . He became world middle heavyweight champion in 1977 .

Life

Sergei Poltorazki started lifting weights in Riga in 1965 . After his first major successes in the national field, he joined the Soviet Army and moved to Kiev in 1971 , where he became a member of the local Army Sports Club (CSKA).

In 1970 he finished at the Soviet championship in the middle heavyweight with 507.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight, the 2nd place behind Vasily Kolotow , who reached 532.5 kg. A year later, he already managed 520 kg in the same championship, but still had to be content with 3rd place because Kolotow reached 537.5 kg and David Rigert 535 kg. Vasily Kolotow and especially the exceptional athlete David Rigert were also the ones who delayed Sergei Poltorazki's international career because he could not beat them.

1974 Sergei Poltorazki was then used together with David Rigert at the European Championships in Verona in the middle heavyweight division and there reached 362.5 kg (162.5-200) in a duel. With this performance he took 3rd place behind David Rigert, who reached 385 kg and the Bulgarian Andon Nikolow , who also reached 385 kg. He was also at the 1974 World Championships in Manila and came there with 367.5 kg (162.5-205) behind David Rigert, 387.5 kg, even on 2nd place, because Andon Nikolow did not compete there.

At the World and European Championships in Moscow in 1975 , Sergei Poltorazki rose to 372.5 kg (165–207.5) in the middle heavyweight division and thus came second behind David Rigert , 377.5 kg.

At the Soviet championship in 1976 Sergei Poltorazki reached 392.5 kg (175-217.5) in the duel of the middle heavyweight a personal best and thus occupied behind David Rigert, who set up a new world record with 400 kg (180-220) in the duel 2nd place. He was then sent to the Olympic Games in Montreal . In Montreal he experienced the blackest day of his weightlifting career, because he failed in the snatch three times at his initial weight of 162.5 kg and then gave up in exasperation. Without a duel he remained unplaced.

At the Soviet championship in 1977 David Rigert started a class higher, in the 1st heavyweight division, which had been newly introduced. Sergei Poltorazki came in this championship in the middle heavyweight to 362.5 kg (162.5-200) and finished only 3rd behind Adam Saidulajew , 375 kg and Pawel Syrchin , 370 kg. The Soviet Weightlifting Association sent him to Stuttgart for the World Championships anyway because Saidulajew and Syrchin had no experience of international championships. Sergei Poltorazki met the expectations of his association in Stuttgart and was world champion with 375 kg (167.5-207.5) ahead of Rolf Milser from the Federal Republic of Germany , who reached 370 kg (162.5-207.5).

1878 Sergei Poltorazki was at the Soviet championship in middle heavyweight with 375 kg (165-210) third behind the returned to this weight class David Rigert, 380 kg and Adam Saidulajew, who also achieved 380 kg. From then on he was no longer used in any international championships, but was still active until 1980 and even achieved a world record that year with 227.5 kg in the jerk of the 1st heavyweight.
