Győző Veres [ ˈɟøːzøː ˈvɛrɛʃ ] (born June 13, 1936 in Berekböszörmény ; † February 1, 2011 in Melbourne , Victoria ) was a Hungarian weightlifter .

Life

Győző Veres from Tatabánya started lifting weights at the age of 18. After consistent development and hard training, the talented athlete achieved his first successes on a national level in 1956. He continued to develop until 1960 and won a medal for the first time at an international championship. Győző Veres was a very independent mind who did not accept everything that was demanded of him by the Hungarian coaches and officials. So he developed his own training system, with what was at the time revolutionary training six times a week. The result was that Veres was suspended several times in the course of his career by the Hungarian association and then had to start over and over again. These arguments probably cost him his Olympic victory in 1964 or 1968. At the forefront of weightlifting history is his gripping duel for the world title against the Soviet athlete Vladimir Belyayev in Berlin in 1966 . With the same performance, he only lost due to the slightly higher body weight. His greatest victory was without a doubt that of the 1963 World Cup in Stockholm over the great Rudolf Plukfelder from the USSR with a 10 kg lead in the Olympic three-way battle.

From 1974 Veres lived in Australia.
