Gennady Weniaminowitsch Bessonow

Gennadi Weniaminowitsch Bessonow ( Russian Геннадий Вениаминович Бессонов ; * 1954 ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Gennady Bessonov began lifting weights in 1970 in Shakhty , the city that had developed into one of the centers of Soviet weightlifting in the 1960s. He had attended school in Shakhty and started to study technology. He made good progress with his trainer W. K. Dorochin. Between 1977 and 1980 he was twice world champion and European champion. For the Olympic Games he could not qualify. He ended his career in 1982.

Today he is an officer in the militia .

  • 1978, 2nd place , WM in Gettysburg , Ms, with 372.5 kg, behind Rolf Milser , Germany , 377.5 kg and in front of Antalovics, Hungary, 367.5 kg;
  • 1979, 1st place , Baltic Cup in Tallinn , Ms, with 382.5 kg, ahead of Walo, Poland, 345 kg and Frank Mantek , GDR, 340 kg;
  • 1979, 1st place , World Championships in Thessaloniki , Ms, with 380 kg, ahead of Milser, 377.5 kg and Walo, 362.5 kg;
  • 1980, 2nd place , Baltic Cup in Bollnäs , Ms, with 350 kg, behind Milser, 370 kg and in front of Gerd Kennel, Germany, 347.5 kg;
  • 1980, 3rd place , EM, Ms, behind Rumen Alexandrow, Bulgaria and Valeri Schari, USSR;
  • 1981, 3rd place , Grand Prix of the USSR in Lemberg , Ms, with 385 kg, behind Yuri Sacharewitsch , USSR, 397.5 kg and Plokhoi, USSR, 396 kg;
  • 1981, 1st place , Baltic Cup, Ms, with 360 kg, in front of Werner Westphal, GDR, 355 kg and Bernd Klasen, GDR, 330 kg.
