Gennadi Ivanovich Ivanchenko ( Russian Геннадий Иванович Иванченко ; born July 30, 1946 in Gschatsk ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Ivanchenko grew up in Riga and attended school there. As a teenager he did athletics and came into contact with weightlifting during training . He liked this sport so much that he decided to practice it as his main sport in the future. In his first smaller competitions in a regional context, he came as a lightweight on 275 to 300 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. Under the guidance of his trainer M. Freifeld, however, he continued to practice diligently and, as a middleweight, made the jump to 410 kg in 1967. But then it took another three years before he had reached the Soviet and thus the world top. 1970 was the most successful year of his career because he became world and European champion. After that he was among the world's best for a few more years. The strong competition in their own country, however, prevented further use at the Olympic Games, World and European Championships.
