Ireneusz Paliński [ irɛˈnɛuʃ paˈliɲsci ] (born  May 13, 1932 in Nużewo near Ciechanów ; †  July 9, 2006 in Warsaw ) was a Polish weightlifter and Olympic champion.

Career

Paliński began lifting weights during his military service in 1955. Under coach Bronisław Stępny in Wroclaw , he soon achieved such good performances that the then famous coaches Klemens Roguski and August Dziedzic took on him. As early as 1957, he started at the European Championships in Katowice , where he finished third. He kept improving and was among the best in the world for the next ten years.

He proved his fighting skills in 1958 on the occasion of an international match between Germany  and  Poland in Munich , in which he achieved 415 kg in the Olympic three-way fight, although he had to stay in bed the day before with a fever and angina. His greatest success was his victory at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in the light heavyweight division (up to 82.5 kg body weight). Later he switched to middle-heavyweight (up to 90 kg body weight), in which he was immediately back in the top class. In his career he fought with Rudolf Plukfelder , Louis Martin , Arkadi Vorobjow and Géza Tóth .

Ireneusz Paliński studied construction in Wroclaw and after his time as an active also worked as a trainer.
