Kianoush Rostami (born July 23, 1991 in Eslamabad-e Gharb, Kermanshah Province , Iran ) is an Iranian weightlifter . He is multiple world champion and won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 2016 Olympic Games .

Career

Kianoush Rostami began lifting weights as a child at the age of 10 after an older brother took him to weightlifting training. Before that he was a gymnast. He belongs to the sports club Melli Haffari Ahvaz . Faraz Ramhormozi has been his trainer since 2014. Kianoush Rostami trains at least four times a day and currently weightlifting is also his job because this intensive training does not allow any other occupations at all. At a height of 1.73 meters he started out as a lightweight , but grew over the years from the middleweight to the light-heavyweight.

As a junior he was used for the first time in 2008 at an international championship, the Asian championship in Kanazawa / Japan. He started in the lightweight and managed to snatch 131 kg. With this performance he came in 10th place in this sub-discipline. In the push he did not make a valid attempt, so that he remained unplaced without a duel.

In 2010 he was at the Junior World Championships (U 20) in Sofia in the middleweight division with a duel performance of 347 kg (160-187) three times the title holder (duel, snatch and push). He was then used for the first time in September 2010 in Antalya at the age of 19 at the Senior World Championships. He reached there in the middleweight duel 354 kg (161-193) and came in 4th place. With his performance in the snatch of 161 kg, he won a world championship bronze medal and thus the first medal at world championships for seniors.

2011 came Kianoush Rostami at the Asian Championships in Tongling in light heavyweight in a duel on 363 kg (162-201) and finished with this performance behind the Chinese Olympic champion of 2008 Lu Yong, who came to 385 kg (173-212), the 2nd place . Two months later he became World Junior Light Heavyweight Champion in Penang. He increased it in the duel to 378 kg (168-210) and thus won over the Russian Apti Auchadow , who also came in the duel to 378 kg (172-206), but was slightly heavier than Kianoush Rostami. In November 2011 he was finally used at the World Seniors Championships in Paris. He increased there in a duel to 382 kg (173-209) and thus somewhat surprisingly world champion in duels and jerks. He referred Benjamin Hennequin , France, 378 kg (170-208) and Adrian Zieliński , Poland, 376 kg (174-202) to the next places.

In April 2012, Kianoush Rostami was relegated to 2nd place at the Asian Championships in Pyoengtaek / South Korea in the light heavyweight division by his compatriot Sourab Moradi . He achieved 383 kg (172-211) in a duel, while Moradi came to 388 kg (172-216). Both athletes were then used by the Iranian Weightlifting Association at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Both could not convince there considering their possibilities. While Sourab Moradi had three failed attempts in the snap with 166 kg, Kianoush Rostami succeeded only one attempt in both the snap with 171 kg and in the push with 209 kg. In the snatch he failed twice in 174 kg and in the jerk he failed twice in an attempt to secure the Olympic victory after all with 214 kg. With 380 kg (171-209) in a duel, he later won an Olympic silver medal after the doped Apti Auchadow was convicted in 2016. Olympic champion was Adrian Zielinski with 385 kg (174-211).

After differences with the Iranian Weightlifting Association, Kianoush Rostami was not used in any international championships in 2013. After these differences had been resolved, he was able to continue his international career in 2014. In September 2014 he started at the Asian Games in Incheon / South Korea. He achieved in the light heavyweight 380 kg (172-208), but had to admit defeat to the Chinese Tian Tao, who came to 381 kg (163-218). At the World Championships in Almaty he was in even better shape and achieved 391 kg (178-213) in a duel. With this performance he won ahead of Ivan Markow from Bulgaria, who came to 390 kg (179-211). Of course, this victory was on the knife's edge, because Kianousch Rostami initially had two failed attempts in jerking with 211 kg and 212 kg, but then proved his nerve strength in the third attempt in which he mastered 213 kg.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won the first gold medal at these Olympic Games for Iran in his weight class in a duel with a new world record of 396 kg.

After the severe earthquake in Kermanshah in November 2017, Rostami and other athletes collected relief supplies for the victims of the earthquake and auctioned his 2016 gold medal to raise money for this purpose.
