Vasily Matveevich Stepanov

Wassili Matwejewitsch Stepanow ( Russian Василий Матвеевич Степанов , Latvian Vasīlijs Stepanovs ; born December 27, 1927 in Leningrad ; † April 8, 2011 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Vasily Stepanov joined the Soviet Navy at a young age and was stationed in Riga . It was there that he began lifting weights as a member of Dinamo Riga . After long training he reached 335 kg in the Olympic three-way fight in 1951. In 1953 he took part in the Soviet championships for the first time and took an excellent 2nd place in the middleweight division with 377.5 kg. Later he grew into the light heavyweight (up to 82.5 kg body weight). In the mid-1950s, when Trofim Lomakin , who had previously been the undisputed leader of the Soviet light heavyweights, had problems with the association, he was used at the 1955 World Championships and the 1956 Olympic Games , where he both came second behind the then unbeatable current American Thomas Kono took. Vasily Stepanow was still active until 1963 and achieved a number of excellent placements, especially at the Soviet championships.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he opted for Latvia , took its citizenship and the name Vasīlijs Stepanovs .

  • 1962, 1st place , Grand Prix of the USSR in Moscow, Ms, with 460 kg, in front of Eduard Browko , USSR, 450 kg and Pegow, USSR, 437.5 kg.
