Career

Bill March attended Dallastown High School as a teenager and did a variety of high school sports. He was noticed by former US bodybuilding champion Vern Weaver and heavy athletics trainer Dick Smith because of his extraordinary strength. Weaver then put March in touch with Bob Hoffmann, the American weightlifting mentor, who brought March to the York Barbell Club. It was there that Bill began lifting weights in 1958. He developed quickly and was first American champion in 1961. He also proved himself on the international stage, but without winning other major titles other than winning the Pan American Games in 1963. His strength was pushing. In this discipline he also set a world record in 1963. In 1970 he ended his career as a weightlifter.
