Seguidilla
The Seguidilla ( Spanish for "continuation") is a popular seven-line stanza form with various forms , especially in the poetry of the Spanish Siglo de Oro (16th - 17th centuries) :
- Seguidilla simple
- "Simple" Seguidilla: four-line verse with rhymeless 7- or 8-Silblern and assonierenden or rare assonant 5- or 6-Silblern
- Scheme: 7-8x 5-6a 7-8x 5-6a
- Example:
Hacia Roma caminan
dos peregrinos,
a que los case el Papa,
porque son primos.
- Seguidilla compuesta
- "Compound" Seguidilla: Extension of the Seguidilla simple to a seven-line stanza consisting of a four-line, he simple form corresponding copla ("strophe") and estribillo ("refrain")
- Scheme: 7x 5a 7x 5a 5b 7x 5b
- Example:
La cebolla es escarcha
cerrada y pobre.
Escarcha de tus días
y de mis noches.
Hambre y cebolla,
hielo negro y escarcha
grande y redonda.
- Seguidilla gitana / Seguidilla flamenca
- Gypsy or Flamenco Seguidilla: five-line and four-line verse, wherein the third verse from 5- and 6-syllable hemistiches is
- Scheme: 6x 6a 5x 6x 6a or. 6x 6a 11x 6a
Today, Seguidilla is a popular dance song typical of Castile in lively three-beat. On Tenerife , a special form of the Seguidilla developed with the Saltona , but the Seguidilla is also danced on Lanzarote and Gran Canaria .
