Yurisleidy Lupetey

Yurisleidy Lupetey Cobas (born May 6, 1981 in Moa ) is a former Cuban judoka . She was world champion in 2001 and won an Olympic bronze medal in lightweight in 2004.

Athletic career

The 1.62 m tall Lupetey competed in the lightweight throughout her career. In 1998 she was the first Cuban champion, four more titles followed in the years 2000 to 2003. After that, she won two more Cuban championships in 2009 and 2012.

In 2000 Lupetey was junior world champion. At the Judo World Championships in 2001 in Munich, she also won the title in the adult class by beating the Dutchwoman Deborah Gravenstijn in the final . In the same year she also won the titles at the 2001 Summer Universiade and the Pan American Championships. In 2002 she was able to repeat the title win at the Pan American Championships. In 2003 she won the Pan American Games . She won a bronze medal at the 2003 Summer Universiade . The 2003 World Championships took place in Osaka. Lupetey lost to the German Yvonne Bönisch in the semi-finals , but defeated the Australian Maria Pekli in the battle for the bronze medal .

In 2004 she was defeated in the final of the Pan American Championships by the Brazilian Danielle Zangrando . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens she lost in the semifinals to North Korean Kye Sun-hui , and in the battle for the bronze medal she defeated Isabel Fernández from Spain . A year after the Olympic Games Lupetey lost again in the semifinals of the 2005 World Championships against Kye Sun-hui, in the battle for the bronze medal she was defeated by the Mongolian Chischigbatyn Erdenet-Od . 2006 Lupetey won the Pan American Championships.

In 2008 Lupetey won the bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , she was eliminated in the second round against the Tunisian Nesrine Jlassi . In 2009 and 2010 she won the Pan American Championships. At the Judo World Championships in 2010 she reached fifth place. In 2011 Lupetey won both the Pan American Championships and the Pan American Games . In 2012, she won another bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. At the end of her career, she was eliminated from the Olympic Games in London in her second fight against the Russian Irina Sabludina .
