Sanguily was a two-time Olympian in 1952 and 1956. In his debut at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, he was over 200 meters chest in his prelude fifth and failed to qualify for the semifinals. Four years later at the Summer Games in Melbourne, he just reached the final over the same distance, where he could not intervene in the battle for the medals and ended up seventh.

Sanguily later emigrated to the USA, where he studied medicine at Ohio State University and subsequently worked as a general practitioner in Tarrytown (New York).

He had previously admitted having issued over 2,000 muscle growth supplement prescriptions for patients, none of whom he had met in person.
