Gilberto Carrillo
Gilberto Carrillo Quesado (born August 16, 1951 , † 1996 ) was a Cuban boxer . He won a silver light heavyweight medal at the 1972 Olympics .
Career
Gilberto Carrillo started boxing as a teenager. He preferred the normal delivery (left-hand boom) and, as an adult, with a height of 1.88 meters in the light-heavyweight division, was usually equipped with range advantages. During his time as an active boxer, he was a member of the army. His coach was the former professional boxer Miguel Antonio Herrera.
At the age of 19, he won his first medal at the Cuban Championship in 1970 when he finished 3rd behind Jose L. Vega and Reynaldo Melendez. Just a year later he was the first Cuban light heavyweight champion. In the final battle he defeated Reynaldo Melendez. At the important international tournament of the Cuban boxing federation "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" in 1971 he came third in the light heavyweight division behind his compatriots Luis Valier and Juan Perez.
1972 Gilberto Carrillo was again Cuban light heavyweight champion. Then he started for the first time in Europe and won the tournament for the golden belt (Golden Belt) in Bucharest the competition in the light heavyweight division. He then also won the "Giraldo-Cordova-Tournament" that year in Havana in the light heavyweight final over Juan Perez and thus secured the ticket to the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . In Munich he was knockout winner in the 1st round over Ernesto Sanchez from Venezuela , techn. KO winner in the 1st round over Harald Skoog from Norway and point winner over Isaac Ikhouria from Nigeria (5: 0 judges' votes). In the final battle he faced the experienced European champion Mate Parlov from Yugoslavia and made the mistake of trying to fight with the physically strong Parlev. In the second round he was hit hard twice by Parlov in an exchange of blows and had to be taken out of the ring by the referee because he was unable to defend himself. That left him with the silver medal .
In 1973, 1975 and 1977 Gilberto Carrillo won the Cuban light heavyweight championship three more times. In 1974 he also started at the first ever World Cup, which took place in Havana . He won there in his first fight against Milan Kalinow from Bulgaria by knockout in the 2nd round, but met in the quarterfinals again on Mate Parlov , to whom he was defeated on points this time. He finished 5th.
In 1976 he could not qualify for a start at the Olympic Games. He had to leave this starting position to Sixto Soria .
The last known result of Gilberto Carrillo is the aforementioned victory in the Cuban championship in 1977.
