Wilfredo León Venero (born July 31, 1993 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban - Polish volleyball player . He is considered one of the best volleyball players in the world.
Career
León started playing volleyball at the age of seven and learned the basics of the game under the guidance of his mother, Alina Rosario, who became his first coach. On May 24, 2008, at the age of 14 years and 10 months, he played his first official game with the Cuban national team in Düsseldorf . On June 21, 2008, he played his first world league game against the Russian national team in Havana . In the 2009 World League , León was named “Best Server”. Then he won the silver medal behind Brazil at the U21 World Cup in India at the age of 16 . In October he took part in the NORCECA championship in Puerto Rico , where he won the gold medal and was named “Best Attacker”, “Best Young Player” and “Most Valuable Player ( MVP )”. 2009 ended with winning the silver medal at the Grand Champions Cup in Osaka again behind Brazil .
In 2010 he reached the final of the World League with the Cuban national team and finished fourth. In Italy he was runner- up behind Brazil . In the same year he won the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . In 2011 , at just 17 years old, León was the youngest captain in the history of the World League. In September he again won the NORCECA championship in Puerto Rico and was named “Best Attacker” and “Best Points Collector”. In 2013 León fled abroad and was excluded from the Cuban national team.
From 2014 to 2018 León played for the Russian club VK Zenit-Kazan , with whom he won four national championships and cup wins, four Champions League wins, three Russian Supercups and the 2017 Club World Cup. In 2018 he moved to Sir Safety Perugia in the Italian A1 series. He won the Italian Cup in 2019 and was runner-up. Since 2019 León has also been eligible to play for the Polish national team and reached third place at the European Championship .
Private
León has been married to Małgorzata Gronkowska since 2016. The two have had a daughter since 2017.
