Iván Fundora
Iván Fundora Zaldívar (born April 14, 1976 in Havana ) is a Cuban wrestler . He was a bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games welterweight free style.
Career
Iván Fundora Zaldívar started wrestling in 1984 at the age of eight. He concentrated entirely on the free style. As a member of the Cuban top club Cerro Pelado Havana, he was trained by Arturo Yanes Armas. As an adult, the 1.77 meter tall athlete always competed in welterweight, the weight class up to 74 kg body weight.
Iván Fundora Zaldívar was a decided late starter, because it wasn't until the age of 27 that he started for the first time in an international championship, the Pan American Championship in Guatemala City . There he won ahead of Kirk White from the United States and Zoltan Hunyady from Canada. He repeated this success at the Pan American Championships in 2004, where he won in front of Kirk White and Juan Álvarez from Venezuela . He was then used by Cuba at the Olympic Games in Athens . There he won over Sujit Maan from India , Kunihiko Obata from Japan , the 2000 Olympic champion in the lightweight Daniel Igali from Canada , then lost to Gennadi Lalijew from Kazakhstan and won an Olympic bronze medal with a victory over Krystian Brzozowski from Poland.
In 2005 he won again at the Pan American Games in Guatemala City in front of Richard Ramos from the Dominican Republic and Matthew Pell from the United States. At the World Cup in Budapest in 2005 he first came to two wins, but lost in his third fight against the Iranian Mehdi Hajizadeh Jouibari and only reached 7th place.
2006 Iván Fundora Zaldívar continued his winning streak at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro . He won there ahead of Don Pritzlaff from the United States and Wilson Medina from Colombia . At this year's World Cup in Guangzhou, he only managed to win one victory over Alexander Burca from Moldova . He then lost to the multiple world and Olympic champion Buwaissar Saitijew from Russia , with a point ratio of 5:12 against him. In the end he ended up in 14th place.
2007 was a very successful year for Iván Fundora Zaldívar, because initially he won the Pan American Championships in San Salvador in front of Joe Heskett from the United States a. Maximo Blanco from Venezuela and also at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro he remained victorious in the welterweight division. He left Joe Heskett and Wilson Medina behind him again. At the 2007 World Cup in Baku , he won his first medal at a world championship. After victories over Enrique Manuel Cubas Ysaraque from Peru , Cho Byun-kwan from South Korea and Murad Hajdarau from Belarus , he lost in the semi-finals against Ibrahim Aldatow from Ukraine . With a victory over Gheorghiță Ștefan from Romania , however, he secured a World Cup bronze medal.
In the 2008 Olympic year, Iván Fundora Zaldívar won the sixth time at the Pan American Championships in Colorado Springs . He left Casey Cunningham from the United States, Jaime Yusept Espinal from Puerto Rico and Matthew Gentry behind. At the Olympic Games in Beijing he won against Si Riguleng from China and Ben Askren from the United States before he had to bury his hopes for a gold medal by losing to Buwaissar Saitijew (1: 4 technical points) . In the consolation round he then won over Cho Byung-kwan, but lost the fight for an Olympic bronze medal in a close fight against Kiril Tersiew from Bulgaria with 8:11 tech. Points.
Even after the Olympic Games in Beijing, Iván Fundora Zaldívar, at least 33 years old, continued his career in 2009. At the Pan American Championships in Maracaibo in 2009 , he even started in Greco-Roman and free style. While he had to be satisfied with 5th place in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division, he again fought his way to victory in the free style in the welterweight division in front of Jonathan Reader from the United States, Wilson Medina and Evan McDonald from Canada. But he had no luck at the 2009 World Championships in Herning in Denmark , because he lost there in his first fight against Gia Tschikladse from Georgia with 1: 2 rounds with a tie of 8: 8. Since Tschikladze did not reach the final after that, he was eliminated and only finished 17th.
In 2010 Iván Fundora won again at the Pan American Games, which took place in Monterrey . In the welterweight division, he placed himself in front of Ricardo Antonio Robertty Moreno from Venezuela and Trent Paulson from the United States. At the 2010 World Cup in Moscow he won over Marius Lucian Atofanin, Romania, Çamsulvara Çamsulvarayev from Azerbaijan and Andriy Shyyka , Germany, before losing to Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi from Iran in the quarter-finals . In the battle for a bronze medal in the World Cup, he was defeated by Abdulchakim Schapijew from Kazakhstan and came in 5th.
