Irbek Walentinowitsch Farnijew ( Russian Ирбек Валентинович Фарниев ; born January 12, 1982 in Ordzhonikidze ) is a Russian wrestler . He was world champion in 2003 in free style in the lightweight.

Career

Irbek Farniev grew up in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz) and began wrestling there in 1992. He is Ossete and belongs to the Alani Vladikavkaz sports club . The coaches who took him to world class over the years were Nusuev Shevlyov, Artur Kaloyev and Aslanbek Bekoev. Irbek Farnijew, who is 1.69 m tall and weighs around 70 kg, is a student and claims to be hunting as a hobby. He starts exclusively in free style.

His international successes began as a junior. At the Junior World Championships (Juniors) in Radovis / Macedonia in 1998 , he finished 6th in the class up to 56 kg body weight. At the Junior World Championships for the younger age group of Cadets (up to the age of 17) he took first place in Moscow in bantamweight ahead of Uly Duisenbai Jankew from Kazakhstan and Djamschid Saidow from Uzbekistan . At the Junior World Championships of Juniors 2000 in Nantes he reached 3rd place in featherweight.

In 2001 Irbek Farnijew was used by the Russian Wrestling Federation for the seniors. At the European Championships in Budapest he came in the lightweight with four wins and one defeat on the 2nd place. In the final battle he lost to Ahmet Gülhan from Turkey after defeating the strong Bulgarian Nikolai Paslar in the semi-finals . At the World Championships this year in Sofia he won the first round over Talant Jekschenow from Kazakhstan, but lost in the next round to the 2000 Olympic champion Daniel Igali from Canada and was eliminated. In the final accounts he only came in 15th place.

In 2003 Irbek Farniev became European lightweight champion in Riga , where he defeated his Ossetian compatriot Elbrus Tedejew , who started for Ukraine , in the final. In the same year he was then in New York with a victory in the final over the multiple world and European champion Serafim Barzakow from Bulgaria also world champion in the lightweight.

In 2004 Irbek Farniev lost in the Russian championship against Makhach Murtasalijew , who was then used at the European championship of that year and at the Olympic Games in Athens . Murtasalijew was European champion, but lost in Athens against Elbrus Tedejew, against whom Irbek Farniev had won in 2003 both at the European championship and at the world championship.

Makhach Murtasalijew made Irbek Farniev also in 2005 and 2006 the starting places at the international championships contested. That is why it was only used at the 2005 European Championships in Varna . There he won his first fight over Dusan Babrnak from Slovakia and was defeated in the round of 16 against Andrei Stadnik from Ukraine and only reached 9th place.

Only after Makhach Murtasalijew switched to welterweight in 2007, Irbek Farnijew was again the undisputed No. 1 in the lightweight category in Russia . He started at the European Championships in Sofia in 2007 and won there a. a. again over Serafim Barzakow, but lost in the final fight against Albert Batirow , a Dagestani and brother of Mawlet Batirow , who starts for Belarus, and came in 2nd place. At the 2003 World Cup in Baku , Irbek Farnijew first won over Ákos Wöller from Hungary , Albert Batirow and Zhiayr Hovhannesjan from Armenia , but then lost to the Azerbaijanist Ramazan Şahin, who started for Turkey . With further victories over Arslan Khubaliew from Uzbekistan and Andrei Stadnik, he still fought for the bronze medal .

At the Russian championship in 2008 in St. Petersburg Irbek Farniev won the lightweight title with a victory in the final over Mulat Lampeschew and thus fought for the ticket to Beijing . At the Olympic Games in Beijing Irbek Farniev could not meet his high expectations. Although he won over Suren Markusjan from Armenia and Bujandschawyn Batdsorig from Mongolia, he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Leonid Spiridonow from Kazakhstan. Since Spiridonow did not reach the final, he was eliminated and took 7th place, which was disappointing for him.

In 2010 he came in the Russian lightweight championship behind Alan Gogajew and Azamat Bulatow in 3rd place. In 2011 he managed a surprise success at the Russian championships, because he won the welterweight title from Aniuar Gedujew , Ramasan Schamsutdinow and Kamal Malikow.
