Óscar Brayson

Óscar René Brayson Vidal (born February 10, 1985 in Camagüey ) is a former Cuban judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 2008.

Athletic career

The 1.88 m tall Brayson fought in the heavyweight division, in which he was Cuban champion in 2005 and from 2008 to 2011.

In 2005 Brayson finished fifth at the World Championships in Cairo after losing to the Japanese Yasuyuki Muneta and the French Pierre Robin . At the Pan American Championships in 2006 Brayson won two silver medals, in the heavyweight division he lost to the Brazilian Daniel Hernades in the final and in the open class he lost to the Brazilian Carlos Honorato . Against the same opponents he was also defeated at the Pan American Championships in 2007. At the Pan American Games in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, he won the heavyweight title against the Brazilian João Schlittler . Two months after the Pan American Games, the 2007 World Championships also took place in Rio de Janeiro . After defeats to the Chinese Wei Xiangjun and the Japanese Kōsei Inoue , Brayson finished in seventh place. In 2008 Brayson met Brazilian Walter Santos twice in the final of the Pan American Championships , Santos won the heavyweight division and Brayson won the open class. At the Olympic Games in Beijing Brayson won the quarter-finals against Schlittler and lost in the semifinals to the Uzbek Abdullo Tangriyev . In the battle for the bronze medal, Brayson defeated the Iranian Mohammad Reza Roudaki .

In 2009 Brayson won the heavyweight final at the Pan American Championships against João Schlittler, in the final of the open class Brayson lost to his compatriot Luciano Corrêa . At the World Championships in Rotterdam Brayson won the semifinals against Abdullo Tangriyev, in the final he was defeated by the French Teddy Riner . In 2010 Brayson only competed in the heavyweight division of the Pan American Championships and won against Daniel Hernandes, and in 2011 he won the heavyweight division against the Brazilian Rafael Silva . At the Judo World Championships 2011 Brayson reached the semifinals, but then lost to the German Andreas Tölzer and the Russian Alexander Michailin , so that Brayson finished fifth. In the final of the Pan American Games 2011 , Brayson won against Rafael Silva. In April 2012, Silva returned the favor with a final victory at the Pan American Championships. At the Olympic Games in London Brayson lost in the quarter-finals to Teddy Riner, after a loss to Belarusian Ihar Makarau in the hope round Brayson finished seventh.

In 2013, Rafael Silva defeated the Cuban in the final of the Pan American Championships. At the 2013 World Championships , Brayson finished seventh. In 2014 he lost again to Silva in the final of the Pan American Championships. The Cuban's international career ended with the 2014 season.
