Amarilis Savon

Amarilis Savón Carmenate or Amarilys Savón Carmenate (born May 13, 1974 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban judoka . She won three Olympic bronze medals and was world champion in 2003.

Athletic career

Until 2000, Savón competed in the super lightweight up to 48 kg. In 1992, Savón won the Pan American Championships for the first time. At the 1992 Olympic Games , women's judo competitions were on the program for the first time. In their first fight, Savón was defeated by the Japanese Ryōko Tamura . With four wins in the Hope Round, the Cuban then fought her way up to the bronze medal. Two months after the Olympic Games, she also won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships. In 1994 she won the Pan American Championships and a year later the 1995 Pan American Games . Also in 1995 she met Ryōko Tamura in the finals of the Universiade and received the silver medal. A year later Tamura won against Savón in the semi-finals of the 1996 Olympic Games , the battle for bronze was won by the Cuban against Sarah Nichilo from France . Three months after the Olympics, she won the Pan American Championships for the third time.

1997 the fourth victory at the Pan American Championships followed. In the final of the Judo World Championships in 1997, Savón lost again to Tamura. At the 1998 World Team Championships, the Cubans won ahead of the French. Two months later, Savón won the Pan American Championships for the fifth time. The following year she won the Pan American Games for the second time . At the Judo World Championships in 1999 Ryōko Tamura won her fourth title, as in 1997 Savón received the silver medal. In 2000, Amarilis Savón took part in the Olympic Games for the third time , after a quarter-final defeat against the Russian Lyubow Bruletowa and a defeat in the hope round against the Belgian Ann Simons , the Cuban finished seventh.

After a year break, the 1.59 m tall Savón returned to the mat in 2002 at half-light weight up to 52 kg. At the team world championships in 2002, the Cubans took second place behind the Japanese. In November 2002 the sixth victory at the Pan American Championships followed. In August 2003 she won the Pan American Games for the third time . A month later at the World Championships in Osaka Ryōko Tani (-Tamura) won for the sixth time in a row in the extra light weight. But Savón entered a weight class above and won the title with a final victory over the French Annabelle Euranie . In 2004 Savón won the Pan American Championships for the seventh time. At the 2004 Olympic Games, she lost to the Japanese Yuki Yokosawa in the semifinals . The Cuban won the battle for bronze against the Algerian Salima Souakri .

After her fourth Olympic participation, Amarilis Savon ended her athletic career.
