Francesco Cardinal Pentini

Francesco Pentini (* 11. December 1797 in Rome ; † 17th December 1869 ) was an Italian cardinal and politician of the Papal States .

Life

His father was the representative of Tsarina Catherine II of Russia to Pope Pius VI. Pentini studied at the Seminario Romano and the Collegio Romano . From 1811 lieutenant in the guard of the Swedish King Karl XIII. , he took part as a lieutenant in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 and was a member of the honorary formation that escorted Pope Pius VII on his return from Paris to Rome after the overthrow of Napoleon Bonaparte . Afterwards he entered the clergy. After 1820 he became papal chamberlain , later house prelate of His Holiness . On November 13, 1820, the Pope appointed him trainee lawyer at the tribunals of the Apostolic Signature and Canon of Santa Maria Maggiore . He was also from 1820 to 1822 relator of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods, the de facto government of the re-established Papal States. After various other curial offices, he became dean of the Apostolic Chamber on June 12, 1837 , which he remained until his cardinal elevation. From February 22, 1848, Francesco Pentini was Minister of the Interior of the Papal States until he resigned in 1850 and retired into private life.

Pope Pius IX elevated him in the consistory of March 16, 1863 to cardinal deacon and awarded him the red hat and the title deaconry Santa Maria in Portico Campitelli on March 19 of the same year .

Francesco Pentini died in Rome and was buried in the church of his titular deaconry Santa Maria in Portico Campitelli .
